what is the best over the counter antihistamine?

my nose runs all the time.

Might be an idea to find out why your nose runs all the time before assuming anti histamine is the answer.

 

I don't know why but if I drink a lot of alcohol my nose sometimes runs.

 

Stop drinking ..... problem goes away.

been to the doctor 4-5 times with sinus infection. 3rd. antibiotic seems to work,levolfoxacin has had best results.

doctor gave me phenylephrine which we know can only get from hospital.

doc gave me 14 tabs work great, but cannot run to doctor every month.

i take cetrizine(cettec 10mg.) daily in the morning, not sure if it helps.

i have diphenhydramine, only trouble is at night it gives RLS.

Anti-histamine is not a long term solution.

 

Find out whether you are allergic to dust, smoke etc

 

I am allergic to cigarette smoke so I buy those mouth/nose cloth to cover whenever I meet smokers. Works all the time.

 

Loratadine is better and don't cause drowsiness than others. I used to take them but not anymore.

Actually phenylephrine is OTC, pseudoephedrine is only available from hospitals.

 

Phenylephrine's efficacy as a replacement decongestant is questionable.

 

Also decongestants can have a rebound effect if used for more than 5 days.

I find Zyrtec to work and not make tired as others often do when I need.

Suffering from some sort of allergic rhinitis again this year and it seems to happen about the same time every year, so there is obviously a plant/tree/flower out there which doesn't agree with me.

I have allergy reaction to insect bites. 

Take a antihistaminic pill and Fenazin pill for the unbearable itching. 

Fenazin is not for sale in Thailand....

any ideas why? any replacement?

Fenazin = promethazine.  Available in Thailand under brand names Phenergan and Procodyl

I have found that the newer antihistamines (ones that don't pass the blood/brain barrier)  are ineffective for me.

 

I get a lot of traction with hydroxyzine.   Granted,  you'll get sleepy.

Take it before sleep, better sleep, and snore less, feel better in daytime.

What kind of philter grade is it on these mouth/nose cloth you use? What I have seen of the local one, it is just placebo, and i worst case make you sick if you do not change every day or clean/wash them. 

 

Would like to see a link to some probler philter masks if anyone have with some kind of standard philter grade for smoke, pollen, and dust.

levofloxacin can be very dangerous.  Fluoroquinolones Overprescribed Despite Dangers - WebMD

many articles and warnings about this class of drugs .  Myself and others on TV have had serious side effects so I am just advising you read up on it.    Then up to you .  Other drugs will work.

There is also a facebook group with thousands that have been affected by floxins

Not in the same league as antihistamines, but I loved a Neti Pot (nasal irrigation system) when I lived in BKK.  Most of the effective antihistamines put me right to sleep.  Between the dirty air and my allergies to mold, mildew and everything that grows in the tropics, I got a lot of relief by rinsing at night in the shower.    I ended up using sea salt instead of the more expensive packaged stuff from Boots.  (Edit:  But be careful, don't make it too strong.)

I envy you. I took half a Zyrtec late Monday afternoon and only woke up at 11.30 a.m. Tuesday because the phone was ringing. I suppose they affect people differently, no anti-histamine makes me drowsy or sends me to sleep but having got to sleep they make it difficult to wake up.

I posted earlier about the fact I have the sinus/nasal problem again this year and at this moment of writing it has tailed off somewhat and I put this down to taking Aerius tablets (Desloratidine), the nasal rinses and Nasonex.

 

However a friend of mine developed similar a couple of weeks ago and also had a rash on his arms and a few places elsewhere, and the doctor advised him to take Aerius three times a day, and according to him that seems to have done the trick!!

 

Pretty sure that this is above the recommended dose so wouldn't advise trying it unless in consultation with your doctor!
