GSP issue could still be solved through negotiations, says Prayut

Thai businesses should not panic or speculate on the reason behind Washington’s decision to suspend its Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) to Thailand, said Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Prayut Chan-o-cha after presiding over the opening ceremony of the Digital Thailand Big Bang 2019 exhibition at Bitec Bangna today (October 28).

“Let’s not randomly guess the reason as United States must has its own regulations and standards to consider in providing GSP to other countries,” he said.

“The government has been aware of the issue for quite some times, and we are working hard to solve the problems,” Prayut said.

He added that the Ministry of Commerce is planning to negotiate with the US before suspension comes into effect in the next 6 months.

“However, we could not rely on the negotiations alone. Other domestic issues must also be addressed, such as labour rights,” he said, referring to the fact that the US could be viewing Thailand as not meeting international standards.

“The labour issues are tied with our legal system, and we cannot change the law whenever we like based on other countries’ opinions. This is a complicated issue that requires compromise and balance between domestic administration and maintaining international relationship,” he added.

Prayut said he will discuss the issue with the US representative at the 35th Asean Summit and Related Summits, to be held in Bangkok from October 31 to November 4.

Whatever would give them that impression?

and we start to see some of the reasons to keep the baht strong..... doing so it will bring some appeasement to the negotiations with the US

Oh I think this is just a little taste of what is coming from Sir Trump. He has not put all his cards down, he always keeps his ace hidden from view, let's the other person show all their cards and trumps them. Everytime. He will be very aware of the taxing of us goods and I'm sure he is also aware Thailand reneged on the agreed Americans can own land to build a house... GB & EU Take note.

You don't need to change the law, you just need to enforce it, like so many other "laws" in Thailand.

Wrong! They should panic!

Better, comprehensive article referenced below.

Shame we must rely so often on comically poor Thai media for our news and discussion.

So the Thai military and Thai generals have negotiating skills? I nominate General Apirat as the chief negotiator. He needs to get in some practice for when he takes over.

Here he is showing Trump his plans what he is going to do to the US if Trump doesn't agree to his demands.

So little P reckons this issue could be solved through negotiations.

How is he going to achieve that, his mob could not negotiate the price of a leg over in a brothel.:cheesy:

Personally I hope Trump slams Thailand. The way Thailand is treating the US, Australia, UK expats? is enough for me to hope the US starts raising tariff's to a level equal to China. Driving investment and factories to abandon Thailand for other countries. Give the banks, insurance companies, and government a taste of their own medicine.

I have a dream!

Buy more weapons, surely your friend Trump will thank you, confirm that you will continue to buy Monsanto's poisons and everything will be okay!
Surely you've talked about it in New York!

Well Buck Banana why your account surplus so high, why your us trade surplus close to limit of 20 billion which gsp limit.

Seems to me you Junta boys don't buy planes you promised purchase and quietly manipulating the currency ...

I think you in for a spanking ...

Next step. US officials should refuse to meet with him.

A snub would do his ego the world of good for sure.

But it would be reported by the government false media office that being the big boss and the mega star of the show he was too busy to see him. And that he had passed on to that Trump fellow he could stick his GSP penalties where the sun doesn't shine because they only affect 0.01% of Thai exports to the US.
