Trump wades again into UK politics, tells Johnson, Farage to unite

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday urged British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage to come together to safeguard prospects for expanded U.S.-UK trade after Britain leaves the European Union.

Trump told reporters at the White House that both men were friends of his, but Johnson was "the right man for the time."

Farage on Sunday said he would not run for a seat in parliament in Britain's snap Dec. 12 election, focusing instead on campaigning against Johnson's EU divorce deal. The election was called because of an impasse in parliament over Brexit, more than three years after voters decided to leave the bloc.

Asked which UK leader he supported, Trump said, "I like them both. I think Boris will get it right. They're both friends of mine. What I'd like to see is for Nigel and Boris to come together. I think that's a possibility."

Trump said Britain's exit from the EU must be structured to facilitate continued trade between Britain and the United States.

"We're far and away the No.1 economy in the world, and if you do it a certain way we're prohibited from trading with the UK," he said. "That would be very bad for the UK, because we can do much more business (than the) European Union."

Trump first waded into Britain's election campaign last week, telling Farage in a radio interview that the leader of the left-wing opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, would be "so bad" for Britain if he wins.

Trump also floated the idea that Johnson and Farage could combine forces, saying it could be "terrific." "If you and he get together it's, you know, unstoppable force," Trump told Farage in the interview.

Farage responded by saying he would be "right behind" Johnson, on condition the prime minister dropped the Brexit divorce deal he struck with the European Union two weeks ago and instead went for a "clean break" Brexit without a deal.

Trump also said Britain could do four to five times more trade with the United States, but might be prevented from doing a bilateral trade deal by the terms of the potential post-Brexit trade relationship that London and Brussels have set out.

Farage always looses when he stands for a seat in Westminster. Doesn't want to be humiliated again!

Nice to see the non interfering Americans practicing what they preach!

First we had Obama interfering, then Trump. Hypocrisy.

Corbyn likely can't believe his good fortune.

Annoying, unwanted and totally disrespectful to another country.

The UK has its own problems without the interference of a xenophobic, ultra right wing racist from the USA .

Remember that when Trump stands behind someone, it's with a knife in his hand.

Yeah, it's easy to be dismissive, but of the world leaders on choice who would you choose  - Xi Jinping, Putin. One has to realise that what you're going for here is the best of a bad bunch. Or maybe you'd like Prayut in charge. Personally, I'd go for a total b@#tard, someone with good motives but can get things done.

Yes that will last as long as Farage splits the vote. The tax avoiding owners of the Tory Tabloids (Sun Mail etc) are already on Farage's case. Right now they are begging him, but if he doesn't respond the will resort to threats and violence, there is just too much money involved - another plane incident would fit the bill. As much as I despise Farage, he does seem to genuinely believe in his cause, nutty as it certainly is. Boris offering a peerage speaks volumes.

Donald's support is the kiss of death. I was wondering if I could persuade him to say something nasty about my business!

Someone with good motives - really - the criminal in the White House - you kidding?

I think Putin is already involved and has instructed Donald to take this line. Brexit is a pet project for Putin, anything to weaken the EU suits him.

America apologizes for the rantings of our ignorant Prez.  But if it's any consolation, most Americans despise Trump more than you Brits!

Sorry, Mr. Berkshire, maybe or probably it's wishful thinking (as I do).

But the reality will show how stupid the Americans are ... in the next election. Stupid enough to elect him again, the LOTUS (the Liar of the United States). Everybody with more than half a gram of brain in his/her head could recognize already before the last election what a shameful character he would be in this top job. Change, I'm not sure :annoyed:

And Farage listens to this small US brain. Not yet, but wait .... !

I think Farage is Trumps man, not so much Johnson.  He has said, when phoning Nigel's phone in show, that Johnson's deal threatens any future trade deals with the USA and that will hurt Boris's position.  Let's see how the next few days go but I suspect that Johnson may end up with some "behind the closed door" deal with Nigel.

There is no doubt that the Brexit party will have a real effect on the results if Farage fights all the seats but they are likely to take as many seats from the Labour Party as from the Tories.

I don't think Nigel ever had any intention of standing himself, couldn't take the humiliation again of failing, which he surely would have.

I have many American friends and business associates who echo your post.  Most decent Americans do.

Whenever Trump speaks you can be absolutely certain of 1 thing: Whatever Trump says is in the best interests of Trump. Everything else is gibberish and subject to change, history and facts be damned. With that in mind, the US genuinely benefits from a closer relationship with the UK while simultaneously weakining the EU. So Trump is going to push to separate the UK from the EU to maximum degree possible.  That is the only reason he is supporting Brexit. If tomorrow Nigel decided that compromise with the EU was the best thing, Trump would denounce him like yesterday's special.

Just keep Trump in context and he's tolerable. In 5 years he'll be gone. Brexit is going to last a lifetime. I think most people are smart enough to see that.

Agree with your post apart from the last bit.  Trump will be gone way before 5 years.
