Super Poll hits back at Pheu Thai deputy spokeswoman

Super Poll Research Office director Dr. Noppadol Kannikar has defended himself and his organization against an allegation, made by Pheu Thai deputy spokeswoman Sunisa Thivakorndamrong, that Super Poll is unreliable and biased in favour of the government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, and have received sponsorship from state agencies.

In his Facebook post today, Dr. Noppadol threatened to sue Ms. Sunisa for defamation.

On Sunday, Ms. Sunisa told the media that she doubted the credibility and impartiality of the latest opinion survey conducted by Super Poll, pointing out that Dr. Noppadol was appointed a political official by the Government in October 2014, with a basic salary of 57,250 baht excluding meeting allowances.  She also said that most of Super Poll’s clients were state agencies and enterprises, thanks to Dr. Noppadol’s connections with the government.

Super Poll’s latest survey results, which were published on Sunday, claim that the majority of Thai people were happy under General Prayut’s administration and that he is their favourite government leader whose achievements over the past five years were more sustainable that those of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

But it is.

I speak to enough Thai people in Bangkok to know they aren't liked. Rarely do I meet Thais who like the situation right now.

Something that seems normal and also logical.
Only Thai people who are comfortable or well off are happy to see a strong baht that allows them to leave Thailand either for their work or for their pleasure.
A strong baht so other weak currencies ...

But these people represent only a tiny part of Thais, maybe 5%, probably less.

The 95% or more who never leave Thailand and above all who do not have sufficient education are not aware of anything except increases sometimes brutal raw materials need or not.

Pheu Thai is absolutely correct on this. Superpoll has it's origin as the 'Thai Researchers in Community Happiness Association" poll that came out just after the coup in 2014, and Dr. Noppadol Kannikar has strong ties to the military, and even listed "Royal Thai Army" as his employer on LinkedIn in 2014!

https://asiancorrespondent.com/2014/09/why-are-some-opinion-poll-results-so-positive-of-the-thai-junta/

A look at the website’s domain registration reveals that both masterpoll.net and tricha.net are registered to Mr. Noppadon Kannika, who has also been occasionally named as TRICHA’s director in the Thai press (e.g. here). According to his bio from his Alma Mater University of Michigan (where he graduated in Survey Methodology), he was director of the ABAC Poll Research Center and has held “some official positions,” including one at the Royal Thai Army – indeed, he has been research advisor to the commander-in-chief in the past.

According to his profiles on Twitter and LinkedIn, he left ABAC to pursue another Master degree at Georgetown University in Strategy and Policy Management, while his Twitter bio still links to ABAC Poll, but has been regularly tweeting news articles about the “Master Poll” results. The masterpoll.net domain was registered on May 15, 2014 – one week before the military coup. That could be just a coincidence. However, Mr. Noppadon’s LinkedIn page lists the “Royal Thai Army” as his current employer while his job title is, according to himself, “unknown”!

Thank you Bruce. You made my day.

In Thailand anyone who threatens to sue is in my opinion admitting their guilt.

I agree with you there, in the normal world you would just prove your innocence with evidence you have.

In my opinion any one who comes up with a poll saying this PM is well liked, must go by the name of Lord Haw Haw.

Do your survey in rural Thailand where 70% of the population are Thaksin supporters.

They won't do anything about it... of course. Thailand is going down the toilet, has been for a while, and we retirees can't do anything but watch the antics and shake our heads in disbelief.

Still, the weather's OK and the baht's about to take a bath so things could be worse, in fact they're probably better now than they have been for a while, I was afraid that some of Prayuth's more potty ruminations and ambitions for his glorious motherland might actually have taken root, but it seems not. Bit of a relief that Thais can be counted on to avoid work and education where they can be avoided.

Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that there's reason why Thailand is Thailand and why Thais are hopeless. I don't think either will change anytime soon, though I was a bit nervous that they might. Perhaps I just needed reminding that lofty ambitions and grandiose statements designed only to help Thais feel good about themselves, are not in essence, worth very much. A population always gets the government it deserves so we can all relax and watch while Thailand continues to have the government it deserves. Nothing very much is going to change. Thankfully.
