Bans on two farm chemicals delayed, glyphosate allowed under limited use

Yielding to pressure from farmers and distributors, a government-established committee has recommended a six-month delay in the planned ban on hazardous agrichemicals paraquat and chlorpyrifos and limited continued use of a third, glyphosate.

Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said on Wednesday (November 27) the Hazardous Substance Committee he chairs voted unanimously to postpone the ban on two chemicals and allow continued use of the third. 24 committee members casted their votes while 5 were absent.

The committee had on October 22 recommended that all three be banned.

The Department of Agriculture announced in the government gazette on November 18 that the bans would take effect on December 1.

But Suriya declared on Wednesday the ban on paraquat and chlorpyrifos would be postponed to June 1 and “the use of glyphosate will follow the commitee's guideline annouced back on May 23, 2018”.

Farmers dressed in black gathered on Tuesday in front of Government House to submit a petition to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha stating their opposition to the bans on all three chemicals, insisting they could adjust their procedures for using them to ensure safety.

<deleted!> disgrace! i h8 thailand more and more. So pathetic!

I would wish he comes out to declare the exact reasoning behind this. Who benefits the most and why.

The usual well thunk out Khun Prayut Chan-o-cha  government policy decision. Pass the law into legislation, whether it be good or bad, and worry about the consequences later.

They never seem to get anything right by trying to be everything for all people. Gutless leader with gutless committees!

So does that imply that they knowingly haven't been using them safely up until now?

Should expect to see Mananya removed to the backbench tomorrow.

Just this morning I posted I could feel a U-turn coming on,

and here it is,so will the nearly free tractors be cancelled.

Re the remark above, ain't neva gonna happen in Thailand.

As for the now announced delay of the bans, had to figure that was coming somewhere. The current government's environmental credentials are hardly the best. But they are very good at responding to issues where there's money to be made and/or wealthy interests are pushing an agenda.

The health and welfare of the general public, not so much.

ThaiPAN isn't going to be out of a job in Thailand anytime soon....  :hit-the-fan:

Anutin and Mananya claim ban on three farm chemicals remains intact

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Deputy Agriculture Minister Mananya Thaiseth have played down the apparent U-turn over the December 1st enforcement of the ban on paraquat, glyphosate and chlorpyrifos by insisting that the ban remains intact.

Both claimed today that the new National Hazardous Substances Committee (NHSC), chaired by Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongkit, did not make any new ruling regarding the ban.

Anutin told the media today (Wednesday) that two representatives of the Ministry of Public Health, who sit on the NHSC, insisted that their support for the ban remains unchanged.

The reason is the USA demanded them to.

Little Thailand is not so powerful as they think.

Nope, yeilding to pressure from Trump.

What was the thickness of the brown envelope.

Ref ; The 'pick-up' clause - stating something will happen and then overturning it or not implementing it

The US Agricultural Department asked for a  re think on the chemical

Glysophate and of course the Thai Government insisted the ban would go ahead. All of a usdden the US informed Thailand that it was losing it's  preference in certain exports to the US.  Of course, both sides indicated no connection.

I have a feeling that thailand will soon get it's export preference to the US market re-instated.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$=√evil

the deputy agriculture minister said she would prefer to oversee the Royal Irrigation Department, because she said is unable to control the Agriculture Department.

So why haven't they done so in the past?

Delay + limited use = business as usual.

You got that right....

we'll take the correct precautions from now on... yeah right !

Huge loss of face for Anutin and Mananya, and BJT.

Was thinking the PtB might throw him the cannabis bone, but they'll never cave on that one either.

In six months time this ‘ban’ will be totally forgotten.

So Poor old Somchia will still be out there with no proper PPE spraying these chemicals around the food chain, certainly won’t be the Hi So,s doing any spraying
