I actually wanted to post David & another Klimt & a couple of others, but didn't, as I didn't know whether dangly bits & nipples were allowed, even on "real" works of art (sorry, I'm not saying photography isn't art, I just don't know how to clarify what I'm saying!)

So, how about it Mods? Is Mighaelangelo's David et al allowed, or not?

So, how about it Mods? Is Mighaelangelo's David et al allowed, or not?

I don't see a problem with it... it is after all, art.

However, please keep postings within the realms of decency. Let's be mature about it, and not let this thread be soiled by someone's personal version of "art".

Pornography is freely available elsewhere on the internet... we don't want it here on ThaiVisa.

Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema:

Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema, a Dutch-born English Classicist Painter, 1836-1912, became one of the most famous and richest painters in London during his lifetime!

At home I have an oil-handpainted reproduction of this enormous painting, called: "The Roses of Heliogabalus":

During an exhibition, a few years ago, in Amsterdam I had the pleasure of seeing the original painting (Mexican private collector)

LaoPo

I like those, LaoPo. Very nice. I was going to ask if he was a member of the Pre Raphaelites (one of my favourite styles of painting), but I decided not to be lazy & follow your links to find out for myself. Some beautiful artwork, thanks. :o

Thanks, Lao Po. Beautiful works, especially the rose petals and the show going on there below. Have to ask about the lady in the top painting...um, she looks pretty ecstatic and I was wondering what the heck she has in her hand? Also like the playfulness of the two lasses in the bath, where the one is about to spray water at her friend.

Not a real traditionalist, but the quality of these works is exquisite, and they must have shocked polite society at the time for the content matter.

Yes, you're right; these paintings were quite shocking at the time.

As to the 1st painting of Alma Tadema:

August 1881 at: Gallery Georges Petit - Paris.

He painted only a few nudes but there are stories that he was commissioned by the Royal Court in England to paint 'pornographic' paintings which were never shown to the public. o, unfortunately I haven't seen them.... :D

The painting is called: "Tepidarium"and measures just 24,3 x 33 cms, so quite small.

The Lady holds a so called Bronze 'strigilis' (Latin) in her right hand, symbolizing a fallic symbol. Bronze 'Strigilisses" -skinscratchers- were found in great numbers in the remains of the public and Private-Baths of Pompeii/Italy. They were used by slaves to remove oil and dirt from the bodies of their masters.

Alma Tadema had a beautiful Bronze 'Strigilis' in his private collection and is now at the University of Birmingham.

The 2nd painting is called: A favourite Custom April 1909 at: Tate Gallery - London

The bath itself, called a 'Frigidarium' was found in the remains of Pompeii and was found in 1824. So, these baths really excisted ! However he painted the environment of the baths more luxury than they actually were.

The painting is absolutely marvellous and if seen in reality everybody is amazed how the bodies were painted inside the water and it's movement.

The Roses of Heliogabalus 1888 - Private Collector 132,1 x 213,9 cms (!) and is a very large painting.

This is a horror story and true.

The Roman Emperor, "Heliogabalus" or "Elagabalus" were his more common known names but in history we know him as, "Marcus Aurelius Antoninus", ruled just 4 years and was murdered by the Pretorian guard members. No wonder because he was a sadistic young man.

He is the 'chap' lying on his belly at the top of the painting.

He used to invite guests at his palace and found it funny to have his guests killed.... :D

HOW? The 'ceiling' of the place were he held his parties were made of heavy cloths, completely filled with Rose petals; millions of them. At the height of the party he ordered his slaves to suddenly lower the 'ceiling' and the guests were literally burried in Rose Petals...sufficated....and died.

The 'guest' on the right lower side of the painting (with beard) is supposedly Alma Tadema himself.. :o

Absolutely fantastic commentary on the paintings, Lao Po! Your words add a new dimension and chilling humanity to the works. Thank you.

Aint Lao Po clever and 'educated'! Nice one mate. The things they never taught you at art college!!!

Thanks Jet and Suegha but sorry, too much honour.

I have a passion about art and of course, if one has a passion, you look into the history and backgrounds of art itself and the artists a bit more than others.

Like last night...there was this fascinating and beautiful movie on television about Diego Rivera 1886-1957, the famous Mexican painter, and his amazing wife Frida Kahlo1907-1954.

Rivera was one of the greatest muralists/painters in his time but Frida Kahlo became very famous, as a painter, also. The movie was therefore also more about Frida Kahlo than Rivera.

She was an exceptional woman who suffered in such an unbearable way that it is almost unimaginable.

She was a very passionate woman...bi-sexual* and.... she lived and fought like a tiger. There was NODODY who could stop her. She suffered immensely having so much pain.

Both, Rivera and Kahlo were communist supporters and at a certain moment Leon Trotsky from Russia who was forced to look for political sanctuary (from Stalin in Russia) stayed with them. It's rumoured that Kahlo had an affair with Trotsky (despite Trotsky's wife was with him).

All-in-all, quite an interesting story.

Have a look at her history:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frida_Kahlo about Frida Kahlo

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diego_Rivera about Diego Rivera

this is how Frida Kahlo painted herself...locked in a harnass, because of pain in her back; if you look closer at the painting you will notice numerous nails stuck or 'hammered' into her body, symbolizing the extreme pain she was suffering....**

Wedding day of Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo

portrait of Frida Kahlo

* Frida Kahlo had several rumored love affairs with women, including the famous actresses Dolores Del Rio and Paulette Goddard. She was also involved in affairs with the wife of the surrealist poet Andre Breton and the famous artist Georgia O'Keeffe.

** On September 17, 1925, when she was 18, Frida was involved in a serious trolley accident.

The accident left Frida with a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, and eleven fractures in her right leg. Also, her right foot was dislocated and crushed, and her shoulder was out of joint. Frida spent a month lying on her back. She was encased in a plaster cast and enclosed in a boxlike structure. She began painting to pass the time while healing in bed. It became her lifelong passion.

Interesting Lady :o

LaoPo

There's no story and i can't remember the artist, but they're lovely pictures.

Hey LaoLeo,

My ma, although born in london, grew up in the village where Diego Rivera and Frida mostly lived, in Mexico.

Her family still has property there an' all, and they have some sketches made by Rivera back in the day.

When I lived in Guatemala I was invited to go there, and help re-construct one of the houses to become a guesthouse / b&b... and help to run it... Stupidly, I declined in favour of the rock'n'roll I was having in Guatemala. :o
