Any recommendations on where to buy a Raspberry Pi and peripherals on the Internet?

Not the generics like Lazada with which I've had multiple bad experiences.

Based in Thailand, so there are no unexpected import duties.

Thanks.

Actually asking for recommendations, rather than some random Google search result.  But thanks for replying, though.

Gravitech (homeofmaker), have a shop on the top floor in fortune town. also have a web site.

Raspberrypithailand, I think you can order online or go to their shop somewhere in BKK, the address is on their website and you can call them.

There is a shop on Asoke near Asoke Tower. And a big shop in Fortune Town (3rd or 4th floor).

Personally I bought lots of Arduinos, ESP32 and modules at Banggood.com and I never had any problems.

But I never bought a Raspberry PI.

thaieasyelec.com appears to sell the genuine article.  I have done business with them in the past with no problems.

I bought from RS Thailand but had a hell of a time trying to pay them with debit or credit cards..in the end I had to go to my bank and pay over the counter then scan the receipt and send it via email !

I've heard about these and Googled them, but I am still not sure what they can do.

How are most people using these?  What are their benefits?

Try a web search "what can a raspberry pi do" or 26 uses for a raspberry pi, a lot of info is available.

The raspberry pi web site and its active forum also has a wealth of information.

Last time I had a look I seem to remember they were being used to teach people how to code.

I can stream Australian TV, no problem at all.  It was just the Foxtel Go app, through a HDMI port, that was the issue.

Have you tried the Foxtel Go app on a raspberry pi?

Can't I do most of these 26 things with my laptop and android box?

What are most people on this forum using their raspberry pi for?

Yes.  A computer is just a computer.  However, the Raspberry Pi has an element of fun, in that one assembles it oneself.  It's also very small and pretty cheap - certainly much cheaper than a laptop.

My plan is for a home media center to replace my WD TV.  The WD TV does video decoding in hardware, so can't handle more modern file formats.  Many android TV boxes also do this in hardware, so have built in obsolescence.  (It's usually impossible to tell from product descriptions whether this is the case or not.)  Software-based decoding can be upgraded as new formats come along.

You can, for instance, run pihole from pi-hole.net as your own DNS server that can filter out known advertising and malware sites for all the devices on your network.  So, those free apps on your smarphone, for example, no longer display their ads.

If you have a need for a vpn, you can set up an openvpn server on an rpi or a wireguard server and send it to a friend in your home country.  Requires some reconfiguration of his router.  Then you have a private vpn that has no monthly charge and will not be flagged as a vpn by Netflix, your bank, or anyone else.

You can run various home automation or security monitoring packages such as zoneminder.

Infrastructure applications do not belong on your laptop.

Single board computers like the Raspberry Pi are powerful low power consumption devices making them ideal for tasks that need to be active 24/7.

Examples in the home >

DNS server.
VPN server.
Automation server.
Torrent box.

No I haven't tried it ,just having a little joke.

My Raspberry Pi  ( Version 1 Model B  256MB )   Raspbian OS (Debian) runs Transmission (torrents), Samba (file sharing/NAS), MySQL,Node-Red and Mosqitto servers. (home automation)  it struggles a bit with all that going on.

My Pi4  is doing light duty running Kodi media center.

I also used a raspberry Pi to reprogram/install custom firmware  into some  "smart"  switches and LED bulbs..so they can be controlled  with Node-Red ( all in my own LAN)  instead of their normal Chinese cloud based control system.

Experimented with a Raspberry Pi CCTV/IPCAM setup  https://github.com/ccrisan/motioneyeos/wiki

but now you can get IP cams for very cheap prices.

Thanks to all those who replied to my questions about a raspberry pi.

I am already doing most of what you guys are doing on a raspberry pi on my laptop and android box, also my phone, except for the DNS server thing, but run Ad Block Plus.

I can VPN back to my modem in my home country from my phone and laptop.  Kodi is on an android box.  Torrents from the laptop.  I have access to some IP CCTV cameras at my residence on phone and laptop.  I have some home automation through an internet switch and some WiFi switches in my residence.

I see they are small, and cheap.  I am sure you guys are using them to their fullest, which is something that would be beyond my capabilities.  Some terms used I have never heard before.

I'll do more research on them.
