Scotland must be given new independence vote - Sturgeon

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and there are none as desperate as that staunch defender of socialism, Gorgeous George Galloway, invoking the support of his Tory and Labour chums to fight the 'evils' of Scottish independence.

¡Viva la Revolución, comrade, Fidel would be proud of you!

I am more interested in Scottish King James VI, who also reigned over England, and so creating the Union, then a few years later we had a combined parliament...

Seems these independence folk are traitorous, no respect for their late Kings wishes..... ????

The Stewarts died out with queen Anne so I am not sure that they hold nearly as much pull as our current lot. But I like Merkel and Germans in general so I am more than happy to give Betty a cheeky nod of appreciation. Anyway, I think she will stay queen when we leave the UK, at least in the beginning.

Well there we have it, you want the break up of the union and to be under the control of the Germans.

If you had said that in the beginning of the Brexit thing, everything would have been made clear. I myself am totally the opposite, don't want the break up of the union or be governed by Germany, they tried that twice with munitions, tyranny and genocide..

Oh well, I guess you are not a true Brit, by the sound of it. ????

Anyway, back to more contemporary matters. As this article in today's FT highlights, things are rapidly gathering pace in the constitutional battle between Edinburgh and London.

In preparation for Brexit, the tories are drafting a white paper which will remove a whole raft of devolved powers on areas such as animal welfare, food standards and gmo. That will sit as badly with the electorate as it does with Holyrood.

Edinburgh threatens to defy London on post-Brexit legislation

We do not accept that this is a legitimate way of operating within devolution,” said Mr Russell. “[If] they pass legislation . . . then we will have no intention of implementing that and they would have to essentially go to court to force its implementation.”

That could pave the way for a court battle over a UK government attempt to curb the Scottish parliament’s powers in the run-up to Holyrood elections in May 2021 that opinion polls suggest the pro-independence SNP is on course to win by a large margin.

The boot may yet be on the other foot, RR ????

Key phrase:

All that English people get for the vast subsidies which we give every year out of our taxes for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is the “bill and the blame”!

To be honest, it's getting to the point where I will take a technical knock out; a decisively clean break endorsed by all is preferable but independence by default will be every bit as welcome.

HM Forces might not mind being based up there again after seeing this carrot from Boris's Govt.

Quote

More than 7,000 troops left out of pocket by higher taxes in Scotland will again be protected in the next financial year.

An annual payment will continue to be provided to serving personnel earning £28,443 or more a year to make sure that all British troops, regardless of where they are deployed or where their families are based, will pay the same income tax. The average payment made will be £850.

It follows a 2018 promise by defence that Scottish government tax hikes would not adversely affect serving personnel, amid concerns they could create low morale and result in Scotland becoming a less attractive place for military personnel to be posted.

Are SNP members typically racist, fascist or anglophobic? Can you provide examples?

Here's an interesting interview with one the main leaders of the unionist movement in Scotland. He sounds a lot like the type of person you described (without, of course, the anglophobia or ties to the SNP).

Meet the pro-union activist who has worked for the Orange Order and denies Jews were murdered in gas chambers

And here some Scotsmen showing some of the characteristics you are projecting on the SNP, but I am certain that they are more in tune with your way of thinking than mine.

But we are the racists and fascists? Well, if this lot is your definition of what is good then I am happy to say that I am nothing like them.

I trust you are not claiming that that individual is in any way typical of Unionists.

You say he "worked for" the Orange Order but not that he was or is a member.

The salute also puzzles me but I have been told that it is representative of the Red Hand.

It is a long time since I have seen it so I will make further enquiries.

Well you said that the typical SNP supporter is "a hate-filled, anglophobic racist/fascist." so I was just playing along.

As my other post stated, the English, yes the English tax payers are subsidising Scotland's budget to the tune of 64% and even so last year they had a further budget deficit of 8%.  But the good old SNP have the answer, introduce a tourist tax of £1 per night on tourists.  With the Japanese and French owning the whisky distiller's they say tourism is very important.  So why ruin it.

Bottom line, let the Jocks go

Couldn't agree more. It was estimated that each Scot received an additional £3000 worth of UK paid benefits over the English. These include Free higher eduction, free prescriptions and Free water. Wonder how Scotland will manage when they have to fund there own army, navy, air force, hospitals, doctors. schools etc etc

I don't believe I have ever seen support for the SNP at this level - their support in Scotland, when added into the UK numbers, has then at 6%, neck and neck with the support for the Lib Dems across the whole of the UK. If there was a GE tomorrow, the SNP would win 58 of the 59 Scottish seats.

Numbers aside, the utterly disunited picture that the UK political map presents is stark. How long will Westminster close their eyes to this? They cannot ignore it - we are not going away; we are growing stronger and louder by the day.

Back to reality; This caught my eye a few days ago but as i'm generally allergic to ???????????????????????????? threads I didn't bother with a detailed look.

Seems like people are waking up and realise that they’re just vassals of the unelected rulers in England. As an EU member, you are an independent, sovereign country sitting at the table and participating in the democratic process. As a UK member, you must beg Boris for a referendum.

unelected ???

the downside for the jocks is that these ripple rulers are elected
