I went to a ceremony to celebrate , I think, 100 days after a death.  The main road through the village was closed off; police in attendance; lots of alcohol; lots of dancing (me included and much appreciated by my adoring public) and a troupe of dancing GIRLS whose moves were much celebrated by me and the other Thai dancers (mainly men.)

That's like a sort of delayed wake.

At all the funerals I've been too, there's never been booze, gambling, dancing girls and partying. People dress in black (mainly), white or neutral colors but always conservatively and respectfully. There's usually some food offered and taken. Respects are paid to the deceased, often placing flowers, or little wooded things prior to burning. All quite solemn.

Celebrating the live and passing, as you describe, comes later after what could be considered an appropriate period of mourning.

Actual dancing drunk on the way to the temple and in the temple ground is pretty common in Thailand. I did that with my Thai friends several times. Then we get into the temple, tamboon & wai pra, and go back home.

If that's during a funeral that's another story though especially when it's crowded... Funeral often last several days, and I've also heard people sing during funerals to release the stress.

Kind of looked like the guy walking by might have said, "hey buddy...this is a funeral"

Let the competition for guessing his nationality start.  ????

From his dance moves, I get the feeling he either lives here, or has been here many times.  If so, he should know he is not dressed appropriately for a temple.  He also looks a little unsteady on his feet as well, and not from the dancing.  He may have been intoxicated.

In the clip, we can't see what he is seeing, but you can see the chairs laid out for a gathering, but rather than keep a low profile and let the Thai's do their thing, and just observe, this guy draws attention to himself.

Depending on how the Thai's take this clip, he may get some attention from authorities.

Like many things that go viral on the internet, you either become famous, or arrested, or both.  ????

You become famous or infamous.

Nice moves.

He's taking a break from bashing Trump on TV.

Nothing much to do since impeachment has gone down the tubes.

He should only sit down, listening to the monks prayers,

like the Thai people do and then, finally, bye bye monks,

Now we can start drink and gamble!

I`ve been to a few funerals down here and everybody is just waiting

for the monks to go home to their temples, so the fun can begin!

                            Chill!

Hold on a minute. There are alot of valid reasons for loathing the white race. Many are very real and some of our historic atrocities are horrific. But this? He is just some guy feeling the music. I would not presume that the Thai people present found it disrespectful. Thais have a different concept of death than most of us. They probably found him amusing. Or thought he was a fool. Who knows?

How deeply have you studied the Thai culture and it's traditions? What kind of expertise comes along with these rather harsh presumptions?

But you're forgetting that our Matzzon, is more Thai than actual Thai's.

confused asks.....he is wearing what i call my 'best Sunday go to meeting clothes'
which part is unacceptable ?

When I see this bad behaviour and disrespect to Thai culture, tradition and people I truly feel ashamed being a person of the caucasian race.

Very few Thais would see this as being disrespectful, a little ting tong perhaps, nothing more. The posters I have seen on the various sites just see it as funny.

Maybe when you have been in Thailand a while you will lighten up. If you have been in Thailand a while my advice is...lighten up.

Rooster

Rather like watching a dog walk on its hind legs, it isn't done well but one is surprised to seeing it being done at all.

Get off your high horse. Mister self righteous who has never had a cultural misunderstanding.

Maybe he is from New Orleans there it is an honor to have a parade with Dixieland music being played and people strutting their stuff.

I agree with you completely.

Thais do not dance at funerals and most time wear appropriate clothing- dark clothes - not short pants and flip flops.

It's no wonder Thai people sometimes  look at foreigners with disgust.  They won't confront you but their eyes tell the tale.

This appears to be within the temple grounds, usually no alcohol there.

And it could not have just been man dances at funeral

his feet are dirty. can't he wear a decent pair of shoes so it does not look like his feet are dirty?

Are you suggesting sandals and white socks?

Let see here:

Thai culture= 7/Eleven, not taking responsability for anything, face is everything

tradition= drunk driving, scamming tourists, destroying natural environment.

people= ladyboys, gogo dancers, rude taxi drivers, corrupted policemen

Nah, it’s  pretty obvious ... it’s not every day the mother in law passes on!

If you truly hold that pathetic and chidish view of Thai culture and are not just attemting to be a troll, then the question is....why would you ever go to Thailand?

Like I feel when I read Thaier than Thai posts!

It will amuse the Thais, perhaps not his wife. He looks happy enough....

I think this was a set-up, a fake news, because you do not see anybody in the seats. Maybe it was filmed before the funeral, or after, and maybe the music was dubbed in.  Where are all the funeral goers?

Thank God three was no internet and social media when I stopped drinking.

I'd be a disgraced celebrity, probably on jail.

Much ado about nothing, apart from self righteous indignation.

Not the kind of music that would make most Westerners want to dance. It sounds more akin to Indian or Middle Eastern or maybe Greek or jewish music. He could easily be from the latter two countries....Though his legs do look rather white....lol....555

Yup, that is what I want at my cremation, but he had better pick up the pace as he would be dancing to "One Step Beyond" by Bad Manners.  And, yes I am old enough to remember the show financed by an Aluminium (for you Brits) company!
