Beware of unsanitary beauty salons, public warned

Following the case of a woman who developed a severe infection in her thumb that spread to the bone after a manicure and the application of false nails at a salon in Southern Thailand, the Department of Health’s director general, Dr Panpimol Wipulakorn has warned people to be wary of unsanitary services and dirty tools and that can lead to purulent wounds.

“Files, scissors and all other tools must be cleaned and sterilized with ethyl alcohol after being used, and manicurists should wear a face mask and receive annual check-ups,” she added.

According to Bangkok Sanitation Department’s survey in 2014, several salons failed to adhere to health standards. Floors and walls were worn out and dirty, tubs and basins were not properly cleaned and combs, scissors, curling brushes, cuticle sticks and nail files were not cleaned after being used.

In addition, 81 types of fungus were found in those salons. They normally do not cause disease, but could lead to illness in people with pre-existing conditions. “Moreover, hazardous waste like razor blades, curling liquid containers, and sprays were not managed properly,” she added. “In addition, salon employees coughed and sneezed while working and were not wearing masks”.

Beauty salons are subject to controls by the Public Health and anyone wanting to open such a business must first apply for permission from the local government agencies. Businesses that fail to comply with standards can be shut down.

Do expats really get manicures here in LOS? Some of the lady expats per chance

Had toe nails cut once 15 years ago by a thai lady and never again, painful for days, cut to the quick

Sounds like she got a Paronychia that spread to the bone. Common in nail salons.

Beware unsanitary Beauty Salons, what about UNSANITARTY FOOD STALL< RESTAURANTS etc, they are far more deadly than nail Salons , but of course no-one dares mention that as ALL THAISD think they can cook and do and the huge queues at hospitals seeking help for bad stomachs continues

there are various places nearby where i live where vendors store their carts when not in use. these places are open to the elements, i see cats, pigeons, even rats on occasion crawling all over these carts and i have never, ever, seen any vendor wash or hygienically clean their cart before using it for the preparation and sale of food.

if you look at the ways food vendors operate they pay scant regard to basic food hygiene. how more people dont get sick i dont know, i avoid them.

Thais develop an early immune resistance to most of these, us foreigners who grew-up or lived in sanitised conditions cannot develop the same immunity.

Most publc places are a disgrace crawling with bacteria and filth.

For a culture that portrays to the rest of the world such a harmoious, spiritual, loving and caring nature to the rest of the world is a joke.

Have had my toe nails cut my dozens of very lovely Thai ladies, never had a problem.

When I was young in my own country we had no sewerage open gutters, dirt roads,no fridges, nor washing machines,no overweight people .The prevelence of many of the ailments today was not there,we were still fighting polio and tuberculosis but a lot of the minor things like allergies even food poisoning were rare.

I used to get pedicures here and it directly led to ingrown toenails. Never a problem when I did it myself.

Albeit a couple of hundred years ago the "black plague" sorted a few out with those conditions but otherwise you're correct!

I'll have a wild guess here and say 100 percent of personal care centres in Thailand would make an Aussie health and safety inspector go into deep shock! ????
