Don't know where you are from, but in NZ shorts are normal wear.

Only wore trousers in LOS when at immigration and flying ( for safety reasons in case of fire ).

Only wore shorts in London too, even in winter.

Depending where you live suspenders can mean braces that hold trousers up or an article of lingerie that holds up stockings.
