Ducking under the tape, not following protocol and stepping outside the very small box of convention here is frowned upon to the extreme.

That's right. Yet I bet ya that the same IO after work got into her car and blew a few red lights... :w00t:

  • They do not wan't us here, that's obvious by the increasingly aggressive attitude and surliness of IOs in Thailand's airports.    A pal of mine was given the same treatment by an angry loud

  • Pass Security Tape in a Western Airport and you will see what overreaction is......

  • You don't explain why or what you were visiting for so there's no context.

"THEY" are just a bunch of badly paid angry stuck in a <deleted>ty job gov workers that have not much in their lives and need to vent their frustration at everyone they can.

As my friend Mr Google predicts, this seems to be a worldwide phenomenom.

PS: Yeah the ones in singapore are nice, and the ones in Dubai - you can make a guess what they earn there to know why.

Are you being sarcastic ??because if you arent the you havent been to Singapore airport They are the most arrogant un-friendly mongrels you could ever get .

Try ducking under the walk around barrier at Immigration in Singapore coming off the ferry from Batam. You will soon see the smile come off the IO’s face. I did it once and never have again.

I only ever enter into Changi airport and never a grumpy face to be seen...

I didn’t mention Changi immigration. Also immigration at Changi has straight lines, no barriers to duck through.

I know you didn't...

That's why I have no experience of the Batam ferry arrival point..

I also wasn't referring to <deleted> any barriers, just the general lack of grumpy faced IOs

Perhaps being contrite would have helped?

Can't even say duck ing barriers now !!

There was security tape there and you crossed the line.

You were wrong.

Simple as that.

So you had no reason to comment on my post which is about crossing barriers at ferry terminal immigration.

Like you I’ve never had any issue at Changi and I used to live and work in Singapore a few years ago.

Bottom line is that Thailand like a lot of Asian countries is based on the rule people are told that the rule is more important than anything else.  Therefore if you break the rules you must be punished.

It has nothing to do with keeping tourists out.

Even  when it's annoying to walk all the way, they did that for a particular reason.

And believe me, they always watch you wherever you are at the airport.

Perhaps they thought that you had something to hide?

You mean like humbly apologize in a culturally friendly way, instead of rearing up on your hind legs bellowing how you are a Westerner and dont Take Orders from an Tom IO. Exagerated, yes but thats the basic attitude, innit it?

Dont matter. its a sign symbol barrier or whatever directing you where or where not to go. It might be meaningless in the Isle of Man Airport, but it means something in LAX and try crossing a line in a place like Paris after a terrorist attack. Thanks, my life is waaay to wonderful, I have no problem walking through endless rope lines humming arias, I aint in any hurry.

Exactly, for the life of me I do not understand why the OP is bitter about his treatment, he deserved it, the area was laid out for long queues and the the fact it was empty at that time is immaterial, it would not have made on iota of difference to actually just do what normal people do and walk around as it was laid out, in fact, that two seconds he saved by trying to be being clever cost him a lot more in time and nearly his entry, obviously was worth it!

I think there is a lot more important rules that Thai's should follow

I was lucky enough via a friend to visit the security room in a major US airport. Its like the Casinos in Vegas, the wall of screens watching everything. Then the locked closet with the "special" equipment. But hey, try it, go to like LAX and cross the cattle ropes wearing hot dogs duct taped under your coat that folks can see, then start counting until some dude rolls up at you screaming in USA cop bellowing with an M4 pointed at your face. Know how quick you drop from a head shot with a Hornady TAP round? Can you say ouch? No wait dude its only Sabretts I was bringing home. GET ON THE GROUND POW, ooops, yo man call the union lawyer fast.

Airports, government buildings, casinos, banks, etc all contain things like: cameras, signs and dudes with guns. Some of these dudes with guns arent trained that good. So if the sign says dont enter, I dont. If the rope lines wander for miles, I amble along. Its makes life so much less tense, doesnt it? Thats why I dont shove at buffets or public transport either. Its just far more mellow than being yelled at or questioned or detained......or shot....

In my experience, IOs are not hepful, they represent potential problems, all over the world.

In the US; genuinly unhelpful - they probably use part of their free time to hone their unhelpfullness.

Africa; <deleted>. South America; can be awfully difficult.

only places I have received helpfull guidance from IOs are Australia and Thailand

If I remember correct, couple of times the IO's had taken out the tapes for the passengers, in an empty queue - DMK & BKK

Yes, I agree it is quite minor in western culture but I was stressing point number 4 which is Thai government officers are very strict.

Yes, wearing uniforms seems to give Thais a power ego, especially if they can make a noise, whether by blowing a whistle, or shouting their mouths of like a Yorkshireman.

Totally agree with this statement but now days around the world there are certain places that it is smart to follow the rules as set out, and international airports is definitely one of them. Having traveled alot I have found that treat them with respect and they will  do the same most of the time.

never ever 'duck the tape' at an airport in the USA.

It was not security tape, it was to control queues.

Ah but it matters not what you and I think, it only matters what "they" think.

Yes, like on the roads.

One can't draw many conclusions from one incident. But nevertheless it is indicative of the evolving mood and coincides with the declining view of international travellers.

I was trying to encourage my two sons to visit me here - not interested.

It's not cool, it's no longer fun, it's expensive and generally not a friendly place.

I'll meet up with them in Bali.
