Freerunner on the Ayuthaya ruins: Thai teen gets away with 500 baht fine

A 16 year old Thai boy has been given a slap on the wrist after he was filmed by his mother running all over the sacred Ayuthaya ruins at the weekend.

The penalty for such an offence is normally 10,000 baht and a month in jail - but the Ayuthaya police took pity as the offender was a minor.

Social media criticism was rife after the boy - named only as A - was filmed by his mother doing parkour or freerunning over the ruins on Sunday.

Nareumon, 58, took her son to the police yesterday after park authorities reported the case.

She claimed that there were just the two of them on a day out to "wai phra" (show respects to Buddha) and she had no idea that he was doing anything wrong.

But she said that after she posted the video online they came in for a whole lot of criticism and her son fell into a depressed state and she was worried he might do something unexpected.

So she took him to the police. She said he would ordain into the monkhood for three days to show penance for his actions.

Police could have fined him 10,000 baht or jailed him for a month based on 1961 laws regarding historical sites.

But seeing as there was no damage done and he was a minor they decided on a 500 baht fine.

As a 16 year old, the boy should know better. The worst thing here, is that his mother is standing beside making a video of the stupidity.

And she doesn't think he was doing anything wrong. A good way to show respect to the Budhas.

Blame the parents for sure this time. The parents of the mother. She obviously wasn't taught right from wrong, to be able to pass it on to her son.

I wish that was the stupidest thing I did at his age...  Not by a long shot.

Did you miss the bit in the article where they came in for a whole load of criticism

after posting the video online, that would equate to an army of angry local netizens

in my mind.
