VIDEO: Farang’s aren’t all good! Elderly foreigner caught brazenly stealing mobile phone in Pattaya

pattaya.png

This is the moment an elderly foreigner brazenly steals a smartphone from a barber shop in Soi Buakhao, Pattaya

The phone, which belongs to a member of staff at the barbers, had been left next to the man, while the staff member went to give him his change.

Footage of the incident, which had been shared to Facebook, shows the man wearing a white cap, vest and cargo shorts, casually placing his hand on top of the phone.

After returning with his change, for a split second, the thieving OAP must think he has been rumbled, but occupied with her work, the staff member doesn’t realise the man is about to steal her phone.

The elderly foreigner can then be seen placing the phone in his pocket and leaving the premises, while the unsuspecting staff member carries on with her job.

After realising the phone was missing, staff in the shop checked CCTV which revealed the phone had been stolen.

Following the appeal on social media, Thaivisa understands the phone has since been returned to its owner.

According to a post on Facebook, the owner of the phone thanked everyone for their help and said the phone had been returned.

“Thanks to all for sharing”, she said.

“Be careful of yourself and your possessions. Farangs are not all good”, read the post.

It is not known if police are aware of the incident.

Maybe old but once a thief, always a thief....As for deporting, naaa, just give him a week in a Thai nick....????

Shameful, it really is. The overwhelming majority of us are trying our best to be good neighbours and get on with the locals and people like this destroy so much of the hard yards we put in. And the fella must be a complete idiot as well as a rotten thief, as pretty much everywhere has CCTV these days, so he was never going to get away with it.

I saw a few retired farangs stealing self-service drinks (without paying) when the vendor was not watching too. It only cost around 30-40 baht per drink. The place is in Chiang Mai.

This goes to show that Thai government is right to impose a minimum income level for foreigners instead of relying on false affidavits. Unfortunately, only a few embassies have stopped issuing affidavits, the rest are still issuing them.

Yes I am serious, I don't have much problems with overstayers and the likes. I do have a problem with thieves and people committing other crimes that make us all look bad.

I like guys like that getting deported.

Dementia.. wow this was a theft, just look at how he did it. This has nothing to do with dementia. Some people always protect the foreigners.

I think your logic is somewhat twisted. There is no documented proof that low income foreigners are any more dishonest than foreigners with millions. A thief can be rich, we've seen dozens both here in Thailand and the rest of the world. Moral values don't have a price tag. Plenty of the criminals in Pattaya alone are very wealthy. You don't know if this individual who stole the phone is rich or poor, just an assumption on your part I guess.

It would be very bad this guy doesn't get prosecuted. Perhaps next time he will do a better job...

I have been a fan of the visa retirement changes.

With the visa changes I was hoping the ones that were on the down and out would leave Thailand, these people were always angry and negative, never polite. It makes my stomach turn to see them on the roads riding scooters, never giving way, always on the horn. Unfortunately some Thais now get on the horn as soon as they see a foreigner.

These horrible old people that steals telephones - Go back home you nasty old man

indeed, stealing, when our income is very comfortable, (or not) is called kleptomania.
But this is not a reason to claim that every thief has "kleptomania" syndrome. It would be too easy to delete the term "thief" and excuse it.

an absurd statement re minimum income since it is more than likely the elderly guy in this incident met the requirements.  so if one guy steals a drink or phone an entire class of people should be punished?

Matey could quite easily have thought it was his own phone, or at least that's how it looks after such a short clip. A few more seconds for'ard & aft might have removed any doubt...

The lowest of the low.  Stealing from a person no doubt much poorer, like kicking a man when he's down. Probably an item holding lots of value for its owner, not to mention any inconvenience suffered with any permanent loss (although it has now been handed back, apparently, what was this <deleted> thinking)?

If the thief had an ounce of decency or integrity, he would have also compensated the lady.

Farang’s aren’t all good!

What a surprise! Idiots, thieves and so on come from all countries.

Quite Possible--- he automatically put the phone into his pocket thinking it was his.

Quite easy to do, it's been returned so that at least is good.

Quite amazing really. Everyone on here ranting and raving because a farang steals a telephone. Obviously it's wrong but how about the 100's of phones that are stolen everyday by the Thai people? Doesn't seem to be any mention of that. Just ask around and see how many farang have had their phones taken.

But when he put into in his trouser pocket he might have discovered his own phone there - or perhaps he has very big pockets...

Why would some people be different, just because they stay in Thailand. Kick the ass out and never let him in again. Nothing surprises me.

Perhaps the Thais are more clever when they are stealing it. Without the video we might never have known about this. We still don't know exactly who the main actor was and I am waiting for part 2 - where he brings the phone back. And part 3 - the police station. And part 4 - ...
