Agencies responsible for air quality are incompetent – Nida Poll

 

 

Most of the respondents to a recent opinion poll accuse government agencies of incompetence and complacence in the handling of air pollution in Bangkok.

 

According to Nida Poll, by the National Institute Development Administration, 40.84% of the respondents said that the state agencies were not efficient and were not seriously enforcing the law against the polluters, such as vehicles that emit excessive exhaust and dust emanating from construction sites.

 

In the meantime, 36.22% of the respondents said that agencies concerned were complacent and completely incompetent in tackling atmospheric pollution. Nida Poll gauged the opinions of 1,256 respondents in Bangkok and several other provinces on January 15th and 16th.

And here is the problem! Dust from construction sites? Health damaging Pollution that we are talking about comes from combustion, meaning something burnt! Dirty diesels drive around all year but people really only complain when the farmers burn. Doesnt take a genuis to figure out the major factor here regardless.

If thais themselves werent so ignorant it would be 100% that think the government dont give a hoot. 

They are murders plain and simpel and i hate taking my kids to school to breath this stuff. Even in my house with all windows shut i cant get the pm count under 120. Outside its averaging 200 here where i am in kanchanaburi. We have a farm and cant work it because its so bad.

Human rights abuse?.... All the millions ive wasted on taxes here yet cant even get some fresh air is really worrying.

We  were  told  by  the head  of  village  not to  burn our  pineapples, we  didnt, yet  all  around us the Thais  are  burning sugar and pineapples at  night.............baaaaaan falang  no  good, head  of  vilage  told us at the time ..its  ok  burn it at  night, like  the people checking go home at 5pm or something, the THAIS dont  care you may as  well  burn what you  like, dump your  rubbish where  you  like and do what you want, park where you  like, drive  how  u  like make as much noise as you  like. Thailand .........land of dont care....keep smiling  though

I'm a bit baffled.  I run an air purifier in each room.  Why would you think that keeping the windows closed would have much effect on the air particles in your home?

You're joking right? An air purifier is designed to clean the volume of air in a room, not the entire planet!

It is not really their fault, all they are doing is merely working to attain the standards set by every other government agency, in that every last one of them are incompetent in whatever they do.

Interesting that there was no mention of burning crops or rubbish.

 

But someone did mention on TVF and backed it up with satellite imagery of fires burning in the last 24 hour (at the time of the recent post) that there were 150 fires in Thailand and 900 fires in Cambodia, and you could see a westerly sending the smoke from Cambodia over to Thailand which no doubt would add to the smoke from the 150 fires burning in Thailand.

 

I would have thought any responsible Prime Minister with his powers under Section 44 or whatever it is, could simply say as of tomorrow anyone burning anything will be fined heavily and or sent to jail, and then get his copper mates to enforce it.

 

I know, I'm in Thailand, just saying ????

Signs have been posted around where we live in CM, no burning from now until end April, penalty THB 25,000/30,000, first time we've seen anything like that.....excellent.

Yes, we all can see it.

Yes, it is all out of our control.

No, it will not change I bet ever.

It took a place like California 10 years, many new laws and regulations and billions of dollars to change things.

So, what you think will happen here?

If one chooses to stay here; get a good mask, air purifiers, and deal with it best you can.

Otherwise, just venting a wasted bunch of hot air.

Thailand has already lots of laws but little enforcement.

The media also seem totally incompetent to me, the air problem is a problem for all of Thailand, some parts have for weeks now a very high PM 2.5 level, you always and only talk about Bangkok, it's time to see the problem in general !
It has been known for a long time that the government is incompetent, it is a problem that occurs in all the governments of this world!

maybe i can help. in my house my Sndway825 is telling me its 45mg inside and 109mg outside with NO air purification and which correlates pretty well with my local station which is less than 2km away:

 

 

this is because the air outside goes up and down on the winds, the air inside stays constant to the last time i aired it out

 

though struggling to find sub 50mg periods to do that now

and yet ... You don't often have to go to a construction site .. The cement dust is highly toxic as well as that of buildings in destruction which were built with asbestos;
asbestos is present everywhere ..
Carcinogenic material which was very quickly banned in the Scandinavian countries;
much slower in France where some resounding scandals ended up having its skin and even slower in Asia where I saw Eternit materials banned from sale in Europe but over the counter on the roadside in Vietnam

polls are being taken and awareness is rising fast

there are near daily articles in the big papers

its all over the thai forums, daily

politicians are talking about it, daily

its becoming a political hot potato

 

reminds me of plastic bags.. they got banned after everyone talked about it

 

would you rather we all shut up?

 

or just the ones who are lucky enough to afford "a good mask, air purifiers"?

He IS correct. And he is saying what you are saying, that even with the windows closed, the sh...ty air still comes in. You need a purifier in each room.

A few years ago there was nothing no ban on burning, no signs, no nothing. Then came a short ban and slowly people began to obey it, at least they do around where we live and we're surrounded by rice fields. Then came a longer ban and people are slowly beginning to adopt it. Now there's a big fine for disobeying the ban.....these things take time to bed in here but slowly but surely things do change for the better.

depends how sealed your house is. if its crack free with decent plastered ceilings, hepa filtered aircons, and good well fitting PVC windows/doors then not much of note is going to get in.

 

bathrooms leak so keep them closed, the drains connect direct to outside

 

i do find though that the house inside will normalise across rooms. so if my main spaces are sitting at 45mg, purified rooms will eventually end up (say overnight) at 45 if i turn the purifiers off BUT the house will not match what is outside over the same period, in fact in mine they tend to stay at what i last aired the house at so i've been at 45 for 3 days now

Now LOS is officially Land of Smog.  They will pay a heavy price in tourism and cleaning up the environment and their short sighted greed will be paid by long term poverty, misery and poor health.  Just a shame the rest of us who chose to call Thailand home are now being dragged into the putrid mire with these incompetent fools.  Diesel cars, crop burning and unregulated factories are the main causes but the insane government cant call out two of those because of it affects their own business interests.  With an unaccountable government interested only in kickbacks on submarines and tanks its unlikely to change soon.

Its was just as bad 20 years ago if not worse. However at those times we did not have the proper equipment available to us measuring it. Even up to 1 year ago the Govt was issuing AQI Index based on the China Index CN AQI which is totally absurd. 

Here in Bangkok they keep the Polluting busses of the roads during daytime. As soon as the sun sets those polluting busses come out to play.

They could certainly do way better however the current situation of wrong wind directions if any wind at all are not helping anybody.
