Need to send 120 quid to a friend in the UK can anyone give me a clue as to the best and  cheapest way?

Thanks

PS just spent 30 minutes making an application through the "online" services of the  BKK Bank only to get this message at the end of the application;

"Note: To complete your online registration, please send evidence of your work in Thailand by submitting a copy of your work permit OR employee card OR certificate of income issued by an employer via fax. to +66 (0) 2553 5443 or e-mail to"

I am retired and have no such documentation

Do you have a UK bank account, or know someone who does?  Does the recipient in the UK have a UK bank account?

DEE Money advertises here and gets good reviews.

As far as I understand you can register without having to visit their office in Bangkok?

Member @Pib might know more.

Since a while it can also be used to the UK.

Surely cash can be sent Western Union.

Up until early last year you could do all the registration via email and fax espeically if you did not reside i the Bangkok metro area. But that later got changed to where you can still do the bulk of the registration via online but you must also make a quick visit to one of their branches for them to physically see you and your passport/ID along with taking a picture....the office visit part to finalize the process only takes a few minutes.  Then you can start transferring to your hearts desire.

Thanks for clearing up.

Whether the OP wants to take the effort for a single(?) transfer or throw the money in for Western Union or the like is up to him.

If more transfers expected in the future I would register with DEE Money.

Personally I don't have the need in foreseeable future as I still have an account at "home" country fully accessible by internet.

A person can also register for an acct with Western Union-Thailand to send money back to the home country...I did...and have tested it.   Once again to register for a WU-Thailand acct the bulk of the registration can be done online but requires a quick visit to one of their offices identified on their website (most are in Central Malls around the country) for them to make a copy of your passport and physically see you.

Then you can transfer money via behind the comfort of you keyboard directly to your home country bank acct...the basic sending fee is Bt99 plus around Bt16 or so Convenience fee and I think 7% VAT...it ends up being around Bt125.  The WU-Thailand exchange rate is "not quite as good" as DeeMoney's Sending Rate or a Thai bank TT Selling Rate...the WU-Thailand rate is not terrible...just not quite as good as DeeMoney or Thai bank.  And the transfer is fast....my one test to my US bank the transfer only took approx 10 hours to post.

UKForex, USForexc, OzForex, etc., is now OFX.   The company decided having all these different XXForex names in different countries was confusing potential customers...so all those companies (subsidiaries) now fall under the name of OFX although those different subsidiaries still exist for internal company operations...and you will see those different subsidiaries mentioned in various documentation you see with using OFX.   See this wiki article:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OFX_(company)

You can open a OFX account with a Thailand address.  I did about a year ago, but you will have to provide proof of residence regardless of which address you sign up with....a UK address or a Thailand address.  And they also call you during the signup process....and ask a few question about your registration application.

Now one thing about OFX, the exchange rate they display on their public webpage is an "indicative" rate and not the customer rate....you can only see the customer rate after registering for an acct.  The customer rate is lower....it's lower because they do not charge any sending fees or very low sending fees....depends on which subsidiary of OFX you sign up with (i.e., USForex, UKForex, OzForex, etc) much lower than Transferwise.  They have different rate tiers they put customers in. If they put you in a top tier the combined exchange rate and low/zero fees (i.e., most baht hitting your Thai bank acct) will be a little better than Transferwise.   They use the SWIFT to accomplish transfers to Thailand, but you may not receive International transfer coding on your Thai bank passbook because OFX may use the Bahtnet system for the final leg of the transfer.  All of my OFX transfers (US to Thailand) have received Bahtnet coding.

Just for your information

Talking to OFX (Sidney)  AKA UKForex and more  and was informed that they cannot do Thai baht to GBP.

They can only do Thai Baht to US $ or presumably most other currencies

TransferWise is the best solution . .

Not sure TransferWise works from Thailand to the UK. My lady sent me some money via

Money gram a while back when I got an alarming bill to fix my car and needed cash quickly

and for a short while.

The exchange rate wasn't great and a lot of messing around at the

post office when she spelled my middle name incorrectly (Hang instead of Hans!) the

poor girl had to resubmit the transfer, but once correct, it was a same day transaction.

I see the OP has resolved the issue, but the information may be useful for others in the same

situation, but do check that everything is tickety boo before sending as the post office are

very strict when verifying.
