I like them, they add a bit of spice to the area.

Really wish street food would come back to Sukhumvit. Miss those late night eating spots.

Thailand welcomes any visitor now................... except maybe westerners.

Did they ever leave? They are usually always lingering around the lower sois.

Well the German tourists better board the cruise liner again.

So what's your point? Your deeply ingrained r@@ism just couldn't resist making a derogatory comment, could it?

As I understand it the reason behind the big 'round up' of a few years ago, was that when they began trying to 'expand' their horizons, try to encroach on existing (Thai) businesses, they outlived their welcome. Many businesses in that area had had enough.

I also heard that they had 'missed payments' to local officials who used to turn a blind eye to their activities. They were becoming a nuisance which is a fact.

One lass I know told me recently they were starting to act as 'unofficial pimps' to the freelancers, to the extent they were approaching ladies and their 'johns' as they went to their assignations, demanding payments through menaces.

Most of the above is hearsay from people I know in that area, as I am a regular visitor there, when in Bangkok and have been for many years.

All told, they bought nothing of value to the area, were a negative factor, hence the fact that many were banned from local businesses in that area. I won't be surprised that under the current intolerant climate to ALL foreigners, there won't be another 'round up' again soon as they are hardly a low profile group.

The only place you could have "heard this stuff" would have been on a barstool unless you have some amazing contact within the police force which you don't

How do you know what contacts he has or hasn't got within the BiB?

Common sense dictates the bib are not going to discuss corruption Tactics with a farang.

You get that right?

Not in my experience (with regard to low level, business as usual corruption).

How completely prejudiced of you to assume (quite wrongly) that all black people who happen to be around the streets of Sukhumvit must be drug dealers? Do you have any idea how ridiculous (and bigoted) you sound? How about if Thais saw you hanging around on Sukhumvit and assumed you're a white pervert looking for little kids to molest?

It's actually pretty easy to tell the drug dealers simply from the fact that they tend to loiter and watch for potential customers rather than walk with a purpose like regular folk. That almost all of them are black is what it is and it's not racist to simply observe this.

Having said that I have oddly found them invariably very polite and not at all aggressive like some accounts would have you believe. Hi, How are you, where are you from, a proffered handshake which I have no reason to refuse, by which time they figure out I am not a buyer and move on.

Which all stands to reason. Whatever their terms with the police the last thing either party wants is an altercation between a dealer and a legit tourist which is blown up in the media.

i think many of them are pimping girls from hotel rooms, a crime that offers severe penalties in thailand. dont get involved.

Good that you 'know' exactly what my contacts are, or are not in Thailand, little man, however needless to say, they exceed yours by some distance. Even those with a basic ability in the vernacular, coupled with a little cultural understanding can find themselves earning the trust, dare I say it, even the respect of all manner of people in Thailand.

As stated, being a long-term 'regular' in that area, I am a 'familiar face', on good terms with a lot of people in Lower Suk, from one or two members of the police, local moto boys, bar owners, stall holders,  from time to time I'll stop and 'shoot the breeze' with them. It's incredible what you may learn. If you can't garner a little information from that lot, then what can you do?

I advise you to try it instead of making wild swats at the better connected and clearly far, far more knowledgeable from behind your keyboard.

So you are claiming to possess some 'knowledge' of what a certain policeman may or may not discuss with a 'farang'?

Bangkok is a super huge city and this type of behavior exists in super huge cities all over the world, not unique to Bangkok.

errrmmm ok nice to know the cops have taken a shining to you and a deep desire to explain to a white boy how corruption works

And you call me a little man, Im not the one creaming my jeans dreaming about a bib connection, that would be you ????

Nowhere did the poster state "all black people". In fact he specifically stated "drug dealers, not tourists". If you are not aware of the serious drug dealing being handled by black guys hanging out on Sukhumvit, you have never spent any time there. I am touted by them constantly. Black dudes hanging around a corner all night hitting up every passer-by are not tourists by any stretch of the imagination. Spouting nonsense is just as offensive as bigotry.

It isn't a "super huge city" in any way whatsoever. Bangkok has a population of only 8.3 million, London has 8.9 million, and there are over 50 cities in China with a population larger than Bangkok. Bangkok just seems huge because it's so badly designed and organized and so difficult to get around. Third World cities always seem much bigger than developed ones, even when they're not.
