Police were called after a hospital in Den Chai, Phrae in northern Thailand reported that a man had had part of his ankle blown off after stepping on an explosive device while collecting bamboo.

The incident happened on Monday around 10 am. Tawatchai, 42, was with his 17 year old son Akra and several other relatives.

They were collecting bamboo to make chopsticks for sale.

Police went to the area and found the remains of an old mine. The part of Tawatchai's ankle could not be found.

The police are not sure what kind of device exploded but said that formerly the 800 rai area was used by the military.

A Phoo Yai Ban (local village chief) confirmed that Tawatchai and his party had asked for permission to cut wood in the area.

Military should compensate to the tune of at least one million but knowing Thailand it won't happen.

will not even be an investigation.  If there is any chance it was a Thai military mine, they already said the type could not be determined
