Daily News posted a picture of utter devastation after a Toyota van carrying a dozen Cambodian workers collided with the back of a ten wheel water truck.

The driver of the water truck had stopped by the side of the road at take a nap.

Dead at the scene was one Cambodian woman, another passenger was critically injured. Eleven others were injured and taken to hospital.

Very little was left of the van that was opened up like a can of sardines.

The accident happened yesterday in Hat Yai in southern Thailand on the Rattaphum to Hat Yai Road.

The driver of the van said that he lost control in slippery conditions.

"The driver of the van said that he lost control in slippery conditions."

Yesterday we drove from Cha-Am back home to Kanchanaburi. As we left it began raining and in the first 55 minutes I counted 8 accidents, 5 I would classify as serious or worse.

It was utter madness and for the life of me I will never understand why it continues.

Given the carnage its incredible that only one died.

I read of so many incidents involving the ‘dual facet’ of a vehicle parked on the side of the road (to rest) and an inattentive driver.

Again, effective policing could have prevented this incident, any cars not stopped on the side of the road due to emergency (i.e. breakdown) must do so off / Away from the road.

Additionally - a driver doesn’t lose control due to ’slippery conditions’ he loses control because he’s going to fast for the conditions.

In this case he was probably speeding, not paying attention, saw the parked water truck too late, hit the brakes and skidded out of control.

Ultimately driving without due care and attention causing an accident resulting in death.

Yep....I was going to BKK from CA at 9am....cars, trucks and vans....all over the place in various stages of destruction.

Without mobile, radar equipped and properly trained traffic officers, the death toll will continue unabated. The roads are a free for all, and the impotence of the leadership to curb the carnage is appalling.

Wonder how many previous bad accidents thats been in and repaired when it should have been scrapped ?

The only one SARDINE, is the driver.

We were about 10 minutes behind you....never seen so many shunts in such a short period.
