Environmental group opposes erosion barrier on Phuket’s Surin Beach

 

 

Environmental academics have voiced opposition to a project, by a tambon administration organization in Phuket province, to build a beach erosion barrier on the famous Surin Beach, claiming that the project will increase, not decrease sand erosion.

 

The mayor of Choeng Thaley Tambon Administration Organization has invited tambon and village heads, community leaders and business operators to a public hearing at the TAO office on Monday, to share their views on the 19 million baht project to build a staircase barrier.

 

In an open letter, addressed to Phuket’s governor, the academics, led by Sasin Chalermlarb, chairman of the Sueb Nakhasasthien Foundation, expressed serious concern that the barrier might exacerbate the erosion.

It seems to be a ploy of that mayor to put in sea walls at local beaches to delineate the end of the beach itself, so commercial activities can be built (sold off) right to the wall.

Just to confuse readers of this article, the photograph shows Karon Beach, where sand has been deposited on the beach in the last couple of years, doubling the width of sand.

Good for them, they changed the currants at Pattaya beach and look what happened there.

Only been 10 years since my last visit to Phuket, stayed at multiple hotels.

This time the concrete development and loss of jungle is even more incredible.

 

This is what the enviro groups should be doing. opposing any more changes to anything on Phuket, or perhaps give the whole place a burning followed by recovery of jungle.

Anything that is a money spinner for the Cherng Talay local goverment officers is a very important project.....for them.

Erosion is a problem at Surin Beach, which needs to be solved. No mention of the rubbish and general delapated nature of the car park etc etc from the environment activists....

Those who study such thing (hint, not Thailand) have concluded that seawalls deplete sand , not save it and ruin beaches. So much overwhelming evidence of this.

Surin Beach sea wall project sunk by Phuket residents

PHUKET: An attempt by Cherng Talay Tambon Administration (OrBorTor) Chief MaAnn Samran to refloat a project to build a sea wall on Surin Beach to prevent beach erosion was sunk by strong opposition among local residents at a public meeting yesterday (Feb 24).

 

The project was launched in 2017, and a budget of B19.1 million had already been approved and received by the OrBorTor in order to proceed with construction.

 

However, strong opposition against the sea wall flared up time and again, and was even cited in complaints of alleged corruption filed against Ma-Ann in June last year.

Even if the authorities often does not know so much over here, they are talking about preventing erosion of the beach. How in the world can they fall back when totally unqualified residents have an uneducated opinion in the matter?

The group noted that part of the beach is already paved with cement, providing space for beach-front activities, but the cement has caused beach erosion during the monsoon season. The group suggests that the cement pavement be removed and replaced with a sand dune, which will look more natural and can be used for tourism activities.

The proposed stair-case type barrier will cause the beach to look unnatural and make it almost impossible for people to swim in the sea, because the waves rise as they strike at the barrier.  Sooner or later the beach will lose its sand and the barrier will break up, the group reasoned.

 

 

These academics don't seem to be unqualified, unlike the government officials.
