Pattaya: Mayor's deputy "blows a fuse" over "negligent" mishandling of coronavirus crisis

Manager reported that a deputy of Pattaya mayor Sontaya Khunpluem convened a meeting of senior officials who were openly criticised for failures in handling the coronavirus crisis at the resort.

The media said Sutham Petchket "blew a fuse" after it emerged that information and travel history about six foreigners and a Thai with coronavirus had not been passed on.

In addition there were still people openly congregating in places like entertainment venues and tourist sites and boxing places in contravention of the regulations.

Sutham's dressing down plainly stated that civil servants in Pattaya were not doing their jobs properly and the resort looked hopeless in comparison to other provinces and places in Thailand where stringent measures were in place to limit the spread of the virus.

Other places were following procedures laid down by the government and health authorities so why was this not happening in Pattaya, he demanded.

He outlined how things were going to be from now on with clearer job responsibilities and inquiries into who was not doing their work properly and why.

Manager even reported that Sutham used vocabulary that translates as negligent and careless regarding Pattaya's response to the Covid-19 crisis so far.

He said the mishandling of the response could have a severe impact on public health, the economy and tourism.

Manager said in their headline that there was shock in Pattaya about the latest cases now being treated at public and private hospitals.

When you put wealth before health, you end up losing both.

Yes upto just a couple of weeks ago they where openly welcoming/encoraging tourists from China including 7,000 from Wuhan !  I think there are still quite a few still trapped in Thailand  certainly saw  a few last time I was at Immigration  trying to extend their visa.

Too bad they have no power on the Darkside, it is a free for all out here at night and that includes the Nongrue police gambling houses.

Prayuth has no power at all in Pattaya, that's why the taxi's also don't use a meter.

And the liquor store on Soi Khao Noi allowing patrons to sit around a table drinking beer (no social distancing there). I thought you needed a licence to sell liquor to people to drink on premises

And then they all had lunch, went home and forgot every word he said !

Don't forget the precursor... he stopped what he was doing, raised his eyes from his mobile phone, put it down on the table.....

Throughout Thailand, civil servants are not civil & only ever do their job properly for an under the counter payment.

No. The civil servants were just doing their normal standard of work. Ignore everything important and do menial tasks.
