Japanese  Doctors say the virus can also be transmitted by simply talking or breathing close to someone.

If your worried about infection thru the eyes wear eye/sun glasses or clear safety goggles

Plus a Thai FB page has recomended that Thai attack farangs who refuse to wear masks.

And in Phuket you must wear a mask or face up to 20,000 baht fine

Did you miss the part where I said "stay away from others"? Theatre staff wear masks to stop droplet infection of patients, not because they are afraid of the patient infecting them, but they work up close and personal with patients. It's difficult to use a scalpel from 2 meters away. I worked with some surgeons that only covered their mouths.

Sorry, but airborne viruses blow around in the air and can "float" in from the side of glasses, which is why medical staff wear goggles or face shields, not glasses alone.

People act irrationally when they are fearful. There are a lot of people out there trying to make people afraid and succeeding.

As good a reason to wear one as any. I hope they ain't charging $10 for one mask though, which is what a local pharmacy was selling them for in NZ.

Most of us are wearing masks in CM because of the pollution problems, but I would wear one even if there were not any pollution.  My take is that in the UK for example they don't advocate wearing

You're kidding, right?  There are some who are so rooted in nonsense, and whose heads are as thick as tree trunks, that no amount of hard fact will move them from their idiotic stance.

So CNN has decided that masks work?  I always tell the idiots who tell me it doesn't, to stop using condoms as those must not work either.

The only response to CNN can be summed up in one word:

DUH

That was today's pointless joust on whether to wear a mask.

yes, but having glasses on is better then not having them on. its also better then nothing.

its all about damage contE ol, not 100% containment. if you do npthing and hold out for a perfect solution it does not help you if you cpntract something while your still shopping for that perfect mask.

Masks help stop the spread of coronavirus – the science is simple and I’m one of 100 experts urging governors to require public mask-wearing

May 14, 2020 1.03pm BST

I’m a data scientist at the University of San Francisco and teach courses online in machine learning for fast.ai. In late March, I decided to use public mask-wearing as a case study to show my students how to combine and analyze diverse types of data and evidence.

Much to my surprise, I discovered that the evidence for wearing masks in public was very strong. It appeared that universal mask-wearing could be one of the most important tools in tackling the spread of COVID-19. Yet the people around me weren’t wearing masks and health organizations in the U.S. weren’t recommending their use.

I, along with 18 other experts from a variety of disciplines, conducted a review of the research on public mask-wearing as a tool to slow the spread SARS-CoV-2. We published a preprint of our paper on April 12 and it is now awaiting peer review at the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

NZ. no compulsion to wear masks and 22 deaths.

Can stick masks and I'm not wearing one.

So what do you equate the lack of cases and deaths?  You NZ are immune? No , you had few visitors that carried the virus come to NZ and there fore it was easy to seperate (quarantene) them from the general population so need for masks.

Hairstylists with COVID-19 didn't infect any of their 140 clients. Face masks may be why

By Nicoletta Lanese - Staff Writer 9 days ago

Two hair stylists in Missouri interacted with a total of 140 clients and six coworkers before learning they both had COVID-19 — thankfully, the stylists didn't pass the virus on to any of these contacts, according to a statement from the local health department.

The stylists work at a Great Clips salon in Springfield, where various safety measures were put in place to mitigate potential COVID-19 spread, according to the statement from the Springfield-Greene County Health Department. Appointment times had been staggered to limit potential contamination between customers, and the salon chairs were placed farther apart than usual. Stylists also remained 6 feet (1.8 meters) away from clients when not cutting their hair, and the salon required that both stylists and customers wear masks during appointments, according to Great Clips customer and journalist Steve Pokin, who wrote about his experience visiting the salon in mid-May.

Despite becoming a 'political issue,' new research shows effectiveness of masks in limiting spread of COVID-19

https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/despite-becoming-a-political-issue-new-research-shows-effectiveness-of-masks-in-limiting-spread-of-covid-19/ar-BB1616Ib

According to data collected by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, there is no question about the practicality of wearing masks when it comes to saving lives.

“Our conclusion from that — and it’s pretty consistent with what other studies are drawing as their conclusions — is that even with lower quality masks used in the general population, you can get a very substantial reduction in the transmission,”

Masks are ugly, anti-social, does not stop a pandemy but slow it down... But at least one can LIVE with that. I wear it in places where scared people are many, or where it's imposed, not for me.

Nothing as bad as lockdowns, travels bans, business closures, quarantines, etc. all those, NOT normal and NOT social, atmosphère and privations of freedom and LIFE...

Main point being still on top : stop living "normally" because of a simple virus that kills less than 1%, old or already sick people mostly ? Because of fear ? Because of medical business ? Because of mass-manipulation exercice ? (i do not think so for the later but it end up as that effect).

Only valid reason would be "this virus is expected to mute in a very deadly form", witch is not the case as far as i know.

In this crazy world, nobody cares about climate change, pollutions and cancers (makes money though for medical), alzheimer (no cure, very ugly, 200.000 new cases per year in France alone), atomic weapons, hunger, misery...

But a (natural at least) virus ? Panic !

Human live with virus since the very beginning, a lot of our ADN comes from viruses even.

The only way is our immune system (not necessarely via a vaccine), like human do since millions of years, way better than medecine. And it's what happen, at least 80% people get this virus without problem.

Malaria, Dengue fever, etc. kills way more. Are you wearing a protective suit agains moskitos and panic if media makes it a "breaking new" ?

Thailand : 7000 deaths and 1/2 million injured by road accident in 6 months !!!!! Nobody cares, absolutely nothing is done about. Ho yes, of course, wear a helmet... Like masks, does not really fix the problem.

Corona : 60 deaths and 3000 sicks = panic mode ? (like the rest of the world i must say, Thailand just follow here).

So the masks... Not the main problem, nor solution.

Crazy world... By fear of death, stop living. That's something.

People are in denial of death. Although it's the only certainty in life.

One better LIVE TO DIE, preferably another day yes, but not at all cost, not by stop living, in fear via media, seeking a fake safety via doctors and gouvernements. Everybody dies ultimately. Better live really before that no ?

For me : i have no time to die by not living !

And damn they postpone this James Bond because of a virus ?! Seriously.

My name is... Botte. James Botte.

But what does it do that a normal virus doesn't?

12 hours ago, torturedsole said:

Basically it is more easily transmitted and can infect/kill any age group not just elderly. I've had flu before but only 1 other member in family caught it.  Recently in USA family got together for party and all 18 members caught virus with father dieing , that's not normal flu transmission. Normal flu kills 30--50 thousand in US every year, this has killed 120,000 so far and will probably kill 200,000 by the end of the year and is spreading world wide.
