Man attempts suicide after not receiving Bt5,000 payment

A Buriram man attempted to commit suicide by walking into traffic on Thursday (April 9), after his application for the government’s Bt5,000 Covid-19 welfare payment was not granted.

Police were notified of the incident by a driver, who saw a man walking on the road near the Juvenile Observation and Protection Centre and trying to be hit by a car.

Officers rushed to the scene and found a 25-year-old man, who police referred to as A, crying on the road.

He told them that his wife was unable to make money after the flea market where she worked had been shut down as part of government measures to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.

He explained that he worked on a construction site, but the salary was not enough to raise their 2-year-old child. Stressed because they were unable to make ends meet, the mother and father had begun arguing.

Then, when his request for the Bt5,000 government handout was rejected, he became desperate and suicidal.

Police contacted his wife to take him home and told him that they would try to help him with the issue.

I just hope people remember this when election time comes around, that is, if it's not rigged like the last one.

Your comment is irrelevant ....  I hope the world remembers china and the poverty it caused with this virus ....  here's just one example who lost his job.  Nothing to do with the government.

So who do you hate more? The Thais or the Chinese. Hate to say, but this sort of comment doesn't come across as particularly brillant either. To be clear; blame the virus, not patient zero.

All market traders should be receiving financial help. The government ordered them closed down. It says  his request was denied. What about his wife? Was she denied too?

The key word is 'should' ... unfortunately it is no 'will' ... My GF know several small traders who have not received the famous 5K....

By Sunday the daily suicide rate will probably exceed total Covid-19 deaths in Thailand. Sad.

Of course it is the fault of this illegal government.

They forced the market to close with no good reason.

They are refusing to help people who have lost their income through no fault of their own.

This government is shameful.

Even the docile Thais will revolt eventually.

How are they to fill in form, it asks for previous employment. most of these guys are not registered and do not pay tax. maybe in bangkok it's different.

they need money or at least food and rent to survive.

A friend of mine has a daughter with a small hair salon.

She had to close because of the government restrictions which started in March, this month she will be closed the same.

She went to the local government office with the application for 5,000 baht per month, so far nothing.

She has to eat, pay food bills and take care of her home as well as pay shop bills.

This is going to drive people to desperate things if they don't sort it out quickly.

Thousands who are out of work because of closures are being denied payments!

Read the OP. He states that he IS employed on a construction site. So HE is still working and not entitled to any benefit. Only his wife was denied because only she lost her job at the market. Possibly why his wifes application was denied was that there was still an income coming into the family through the husbands work.

I know a woman who was forced to close her shop by the government on 18 March and she has no other income and she is still waiting for approval for this 5000 a month and her landlord has agreed to halve the rent for her shop to 2500, so if this friend does not get approved for the 5000 not only she does not have any money to live on but she will not be able to pay her rent either. This man in this OP does have an income from his work.

Another tragic drop in the bucket for Thailand, which had nearly 10,000 suicide deaths last year, more than any other ASEAN nation.

With minimal social welfare, life in the world's third most unequal country  -where 1 percent controls 74.5 percent of the wealth - is becoming increasingly tough for the growing ranks of the unemployed.

The astonishingly low official infection and death figures trotted out by the health authorities had better be right and the pandemic on its way out. Otherwise the fight for survival is going to get a lot tougher and nastier, not least for us "filthy falangs" accused of importing the virus.

I really do hope for the sake of all that the figures are correct, it is known that health issues disprortionately affect the poor.

For all those that say saving lives through lockdowns is more important than saving livelyhoods, take note.

It is nice to know that you have that magic ball that tells you that more people are going to die from the loss of livelyhoods through lockdowns compared to how many are going to die from roaming free and passing the virus onto others.

Your factual figures so far please:

deaths through the virus?

deaths through loss of livelyhoods through lockdowns?

Death through the virus=35 (Officially)      https://thethaiger.com/news/national/thailand-leads-asean-nations-in-annual-suicide-rate In Thailand, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds, after road injury. Over 27 people a day. I'm willing to wager that as the number of vehicles on the road has decreased, suicide now takes top place. If these 5000 baht payment get into more peoples hands very soon..........

this is only to do with the lockdowns during this virus

Yes, I know people that are in a worse situation to this man, they have no income at all and some of them have been rejected by this mob who are organizing this 5000 hand out.

It's impossible for the government to fairly decide who is eligible and who is not. Whatever you do, if you reject anyone they will suffer, or feel unfairly treated.

Introduce Universal income - and give it to everyone, working or not. No problems with fairness. You pay for it by scrapping personal tax allowances, and getting ALL working people into the tax system. Then those who become unemployed, cannot work due to sickness or accident at least know they will get something - at least enough to buy food.

The Chinese knew the wet markets were, and are, dangerous breeding grounds for viruses.  That is a fact-they closed them after SARS, and reopened them because of pressure from the powerful.

And then the 8 doctors that spoke out in December, and now this guy that’s missing:

How are they going to come?

Swimming?

Aviation company grades lose millions of US dollars or euros every day;
I am not even talking about the little ones who will no longer exist when all this has returned to normal.

The Lufthansa group, which owns 763 planes, has put more than 700 in the garage and is losing 1 million euros every hour ...

He is working, but unable to make ends meet, and his wife worked in the market, it was her application which was rejected.
