Zero logic on the ban. There are way more people mingling at the local markets, using the same inane logic they should close the markets..

 

How about all the people queuing up at food banks, social distancing not enforced. A good example was the photo of people lining up all around the moat in Chiang Mai. If the CV19 death toll numbers are to believed, it's sheer madness some of the restrictions currently in place...

Stop whinging - it's only until the end of the month providing there are no upward infection spikes. Whereas farang behaviour is not really party-minded, thai social behaviour tends to lead to many people congregating - even at temples. Give them whisky, and it's an excuse for a binge up with family and friends and neighbours - any one of whom could be carrying the virus and infect others.

 

And that's not knocking thais or farangs -it's normal society upbringing.

Alcohol withdrawal can kill as well. In fact there was a report two days ago that a man in Buriram died from it. Also a man in Ubon binged on homemade lao kao (normally he drank only beer) and died from that. Another man (can't remember where) climbed and fell out of a tree and hurt himself b/c he was going through withdrawal. 

 

Also, people saying that domestic violence will go down due to lack of alcohol are probably wrong. Alcohol withdrawal causes extreme anxiety and irritability, which are likely to worsen domestic violence in the short term -- not to mention suicide and other forms of violence. Especially when the withdrawal symptoms are added on top of the immense stress caused by this crisis.

 

Anyone who has studied alcohol withdrawal knows that forcing severe alcoholics to stop drinking cold turkey, without giving them the type of support they'd get in a rehab centre, can be very dangerous. One of Thailand's leading alcohol experts said as much the other day, referring to an estimated 100,000 Thai people who are severely dependent on alcohol.

 

And if you think alcoholics are all like "the town drunk," think again. Most fly under the radar and many successfully hide it from their spouses. I've known guys who filled soda bottles halfway with vodka all day every day, and still held down jobs and family life. People like that can drink an amount of booze that would make most people pass out, and you could sit there talking to them without even knowing they're drunk. Take it away suddenly with no support, and you're playing with fire.

Why would any of you/us think that there was any reasonable logical explanation?

To control where the poor spend what little money they have, perhaps to ensure it's spent on food and essentials?

Also to test our resolve and what degree of resistance - before they take away the next simplistic or basic right.

Maybe next it's power outages so we've no Internet?  Water shortages done already.

This alcohol ban is really serious. I never knew what the “shakes” were till I saw a man suffering here.  I never realized the severity of alcoholism. Scared me enough to know maybe alcohol is a serious drug. It’s not all jolly fun.

Absolutely,  The Philippines has had a ban for at least 2 weeks now.   I was fortunate that my supermarket did not know that Magners contained alcohol.

Hmmm, as my daily body requirement is of 400 ml of whiskey. Guess will just have to invest in a calculator and multiply the rest of the ingredients by 5????

Edit: The alcohol ban over Songkran made sense to stop parties. That has now ended.
