rooster59
Thailand reports six new coronavirus cases, no new deaths FILE PHOTO: Doctors and ICU nurses wearing personal protection equipment (PPE) perform a CT scan for a COVID-19 patient at the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, April 23, 2020. REUTERS/Athit Perawongmetha/File photo BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand reported six new coronavirus cases and no new deaths on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases to 2,966. New daily infections have stayed in the single digits for six consecutive days, prompting the government to allow some businesses and public parks to reopen starting on Sunday. Three of the new cases were found on the southern resort island of Phuket, said Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a spokesman of the government's Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration. While more than half of Thailand's nearly 3,000 cases were concentrated in Bangkok, Phuket has the highest rate of infection per population, Taweesin said. Since Thailand first detected the coronavirus in January, a total of 54 patients have died, 2,732 have recovered and 180 are still hospitalised, according to official figures. With a policy of some testing in just so few areas the low figures are a charade to present to the media and public and justify policies. What about reality with at least a thousand tested in each of the major cities nationwide.?? The beer ban being lifted is important because you would have to be slightly under the influence to really believe in your head or heart that these figures released are representative of the real Covid rate for a 70 million population that has a nationwide workforce that was for so many months exposed to the Chinese in the tourist areas of the country before dispersing nationwide. Guderian
Does anyone have a reason why Phuket has had such a (relatively) big problem with the virus, at least compared with Pattaya? Is it the Muslim influence from the southern provinces, residents returning home carrying the infection after visiting Malaysia for religious purposes? Or is there something I'm missing?

The media on the Island rarely provide up to the minute information, and usually don't update at all over the weekends. The zero new cases figure was for a previous day. Thaivisa members are usually first to report breaking stories. The Bang Tao Muslims are still sharing the disease among themselves and new cases are cropping up there on most days.

Maybe so many Chinese visitors for so long and the previous governor allegedly not releasing some very early covid cases figures and keeping the resort and the tills open until the very last possible moment and importantly they are doing some regular daily testing in Phuket. A future problem could also be the many thousands of Phuket tourist industry workers returning home to the provinces of Issan etc to their families where testing is seemingly a last resort because of potential cost. Is it the Muslim influence from the southern provinces, residents returning home carrying the infection after visiting Malaysia for religious purposes? Or is there something I'm missing? I live in Phuket. From what I see: 1. Initially Bangla Road area was a problem because of close proximity in bars. That sparked quite a few cases. 2. I don’t know why Bang Tao became such a big cluster, but to respond to your suggestion with regard to Muslims, in my area a see general adherence to social distancing and the wearing of masks. One caveat however, when cycling around the Tambon, I notice groups of people outside of two mosques, mostly prompted by a collection of food stalls outside of each of them. Sort of an impromptu market with no social distancing. 3. I hear the mosque calling people for prayer as was the case pre covid, but I don’t know whether people still actually go to the mosque. Overall my general feeling is that Phuket has a high number of cases because there is a fairly high concentration of people in a small area and in the early days of covid, a lot of Chinese tourists. As a result, the virus gained a foothold early on. Edited May 2, 2020 by wensiensheng

mac1970
There is going to be 2nd wave and 3rd wave ++, just need few infected like before and whole show is back. Its not going anywhere unless most of people have immunity, which might take a year+ this speed, medication to keep you out of hospital or vaccine + time to give it, which might take that 1-2 years. They also talk about people without symptoms. We had first test round and only 1% of the group had antipodies, so does not indicate that we have lot of people without symptoms and healed. They will make bigger test round but let's see. Closing does not work as well so people need to go back to work, use masks, be careful and hope the best. Otherwise there is going to be much more worse outcome than this decease ever could cause.

Here's a more recent one and it's quite interesting: http://www.this.or.th/files/6.pdf Quote Although counting the number of birth and death in country is effective, the quality of information regarding the cause of death (COD) is quite low. There is high proportion of ill-defined and misclassified cause of death. There are many reasons of the low quality COD. One of them is the limitation of physicians and health professional’s skill on specifying COD from chain of illness. This challenge is now mitigated by in-services training about specifying COD to physicians and health professionals and also the incorporation of the knowledge into pre-service training curriculum. Other reason of low quality COD is that 60-70% of the deaths occurred outside hospitals. COD information in death certificate is provided by relative of deceased to village registrar who has no health or medical background. As the result, large number of COD information in civil registration system is ill-defined and questionable. Should not come as a surprise that Thailand doesn't have an effective IT system for public healthcare. The only system that seems to work well is the civil registration system itself and that IIRC was bought from the US. No, but most of the world does testing on protocols that test symptomatic and generally multiple symptoms. Even in France, where they are getting closer to 200k confirmed, based on antibody testing, they estimate 6% of the population has it/ had it, which would equal 3.6M people. So that would be x18. In Thailand, where they are even more "stingy" with the testing, we are probably talking x50...x100...x200, who knows. Most of the world, if not all of it, has limited access to the reagents needed in the RT-PCR diagnosis. Manufacturers for those reagents would probably be found in China, US and Germany. Others must wait in line for their supply, meaning very little testing can be done.

It’s because of authoritarians that we are in this mess. By nature they try and control the narrative to make themselves look good. It’s what China did at the beginning instead of being honest and shutting things down. And China again, ain’t doing so well right now. Too eager to declare victory and are now suffering second waves. Maybe we could learn from that. Have you ever known any authoritarian regimes that allow themselves to look bad by being honest? That’s not how it works and that’s the reason this virus spread across the world. Have a look at the University of Southampton’s report on how this all could have been avoided.
