Crew of nine Thais placed in quarantine after disembarking from LPG vessel

A crew of nine Thais on the LPG Schumi ship were allowed to disembark at Phuket Port and have been lodged in mandatory state quarantine after the captain of the vessel received permission to enter the country and offload the nine whose work contracts expired, Dr Onnapat Kowanich, head of the port’s Quarantine Station, said on Monday (June 1).

 

“The nine Thai nationals needed to get off the ship since last week, after it arrived at Phuket from Myanmar,” he said. “After disembarking, the crew was transported to government-specified quarantine facilities to complete the mandatory 14-day quarantine to prevent the spread of Covid-19.”

 

Onnapat said the ship is an international LPG transporter owned by a Thai businessman but registered in Panama.

 

“There are a total of 17 workers and all passed thermal scanning for fever and saliva testing for Covid-19 while the ship was anchored in Thai waters. The nine Thais are in good health and in high spirits and said they were glad to finally step ashore on home soil,” he said.

 

“The crew had been on the ship for seven months to a year and had not disembarked at any port since the Covid-19 outbreak,” Onnapat added.

If they passed a COVID 19 saliva test then why are they in quarantine?

Because tests aren't reliable and quarantine is mandatory for all arrivals.

Yes, but a case like this where they have been quarantined already for 2-3 months?

Just because you stay onboard in port doesn't mean you don't come into contact with shore reps, vendors or dock workers etc...

Exactly.. I've been onboard for 4 months now, although we have had no contractors onboard, the chef goes out and shops for provision. So there is always a chance that we could be exposed.. Having said that, I believe it's all over hyped and overkill...

Because quarantine is not dependent on passing the test, it's mandatory, for obvious reasons.  The test is to determine whether any returnees need to be taken to hospital, not quarantine.
