Favorite tourism stimulation measures of Thai people include cash handouts, tax rebates based on vacation spending, and discount vouchers for accommodations and restaurants.

BANGKOK – A poll showed that Thai people wanted to visit markets the most after business restriction relaxation and the majority of respondents preferred cash handouts to stimulate domestic tourism.

Bangkok University conducted the opinion survey on 1,204 people to ask them where they want to visit after business lockdown relaxation.

Most respondents (83.1%) said they wanted to go to markets, flea markets and supermarkets; 44.8% would like to visit department stores; and 40.1% wanted to see hairdressers and barbers. The most undesirable places to visit were movie theaters (which concerned 91.1% of respondents), followed by domestic airports (83.8%), and spa and massage parlors (81.5%).

I myself wouldn't do the direct cash -- I get why its the most popular option -- but if you ask me, I think it depends on what the real goal is...  As example, IF the goal is to increase formal (as defined here as jobs that put people within the Thai income taxation programme) employment, then I'd probably go for a combination of employer tax credits, reduced employee payroll deductions and other forms of salary subsidies for newly hired staff... IF the goal is to increase domestic spending, then I'd do something non-convertible credits (since most all Thais have a national ID, credits can be pegged to individual numbers) that can be used to offset purchases made at stores and for selected types of goods -- say food, staples, and other items, but exclude luxury and other purely discretionary items/services.

Direct cash can be "saved" and that would, IMHO, go against the idea of the funds creating domestic economic activity.. So I'd go with a program that doesn't provide for traditional cash, but allows for immediate consumption and for goods/services that the government deems to be in line with the stimulus goal... Kind of like some US states run their EBT (electronic benefits transfer) process.

I don't think Prayut will be giving out vouchers or cash handouts to go to the market!

By their nature, discount vouchers mean spending some of YOUR money, cash handouts mean spending all of someone else's money - pretty obvious which one Thais - or most people would choose

Maybe before asking their questions they should have explained to the good Thai people what tourism is.

Because visiting markets and departments stores is not tourism!

Here in Isaan, the unexpected 15,000 baht (5,000 x 3) have been in large parts spent on buying cows, sending the prices through the roof.

Something similar is happening in the US where people are using their 1,500 USD cash handout to play in the casino... sorry, the stock market, sending the indexes into orbit.

People never spend "free" cash the way it was intended to be.

The government should refrain from handing out cash, and go with vouchers..

Naa only people who qualify to pay tax will profit the rest can <deleted> off.
Oh and maybe we'll pay for discounts to stay in 4 and 5 Star hotels.

That means about 85% of all Thai citizens will not qualify. They are not going to be happy to hear about that. ????

Conducted by Bangkok University Research Centre on Saturday, the poll surveyed 1,204 people in all regions, asking them which venues they wanted to visit.

The places they mostly want to visit are cinemas (91 per cent), airports (83.8 per cent), beauty clinics (83 per cent), general markets, flea markets and supermarkets (83 per cent), spas and massage parlours (81.5 per cent), department stores (44.8 per cent) and salons (40 per cent).
