Which private hospital in Phuket would you use for medical care if required

Featured Replies

Would you use Bangkok Hospital or any other private hospital if you wanted or needed medical care (operation) or treatment.

My private hospital of choice is Mission for most things, obviously they are not as slick as BIP but I've never had an issue with them They have been expanding considerably over the last few years and a new block is being constructed at present. They used to refer some stuff to Vachira (MRIs etc) but I know they have their own CT scanner now,

Only at a push will I use Bkk International or its offshoots as the do over-charge, especially if you use insurance.  Some specialist eye stuff is only available there so their prices have to be accepted. Additionally, I have known at least two people who were admitted there and came out worse than they went in with secondary infections- one nearly losing a leg.

It all depends on what you need the hospital for.

As an aside for something like an RTA Vachira or the other public hospitals are probably the best as its their forte. The German Dr in Vachira has a great reputation for dealing with broken bones.

I use Phuket International, but rebranded under the Bangkok Hospital stable. So now prices gone up to almost Phuket Bangkok level. Mission comes highly recommended but I found the parking and reception chaos, but that was a few years ago.

Plus wrong side of town for me.

Just a heads up on hospital prices.

I've been a regular at BHP for many years with a variety of ailments and have previously defended their charges on this forum.

However, it seems the world crisis has severely affected their income flow. Tourist's, falling off bikes or finding many other ways to harm themselves (rabid jellyfish!), have all but disappeared from the waiting rooms. There are now few non-Thais to be seen. The lucrative medical and dental tourism business has been forced to a screeching halt. A couple of weeks ago I found the OPD to be completely empty.

Consequently they appear to have hiked their prices up significantly to cover shortfalls.  A friend, a Thai/English dual citizen became quite ill recently and had to get injections and fluids. They wanted her to stay overnight and the cheapest room they quoted was 20,000 baht! She declined. The cost of a blood pressure test, weight and temperature check (repeated despite the free check at the door!) is 200 baht. This is compulsory for all patients.

I need to have medical procedure every 3 months, and the charge last week amounted to 4800 baht. Last year the cost for the same procedure was 2600. The biggest change is that the specialist doctor now has a consultation fee (1500) and a procedure fee (2000) despite the fact that she doesn't attend the latter, instead continuing consultations elsewhere. Use of an observation room for 1/2 an hour costs 700 baht. Nurses, for no extra pay, have to do the procedure unsupervised, and occasionally problems do occur. The doctor then gives advice on the phone, never in person.  In Australia the specialist always completed the procedure, never a nurse.

The fees for other doctors I consult have risen by up to 50%.

Be aware, they seem to be increasing charges right across the board of late.

If capable I would fly to Bangkok or home. Some says the best doctors here are in the Thai Government hospitals due to be qualified for free education but then have to work for a Government health facility for some years after.

Such as which doctors and hospitals are you referring to?

Which would you rather prefer?

A Thai doctor that graduated from a Thai medical school or from a US or European medical school?

If they are sufficintly equipped it's worth considering Dibuk. I had a couple of nights in there 18 months ago. However it depends upon what you want done as they aren't as well equipped as BHP or Siriroj. It is part of the same group but it's cheaper and for many more convenient.

I have never used Government hospital myself but some friends living on Phuket 30- 40 years have told me the doctors are the best due to being previous medical students who due to excellent results in their doctoral education, were given the opportunity to free education against some years of duty at a state hospital.

Regarding private hospitals in Bangkok I have used Bumrungrad and Samitivej but only for minor medical treatment.
