webfact
Thai Prime Minister worries 2nd wave spread at entertainment venues after easing By Pattaya Mail Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha. At the Inner Santi Maitri Building, Government House, following the weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha disclosed that he is scheduled to attend the 36th ASEAN Summit and other related summits, hosted by Socialist Republic of Vietnam, via a video conference on June 26, 2020. He also emphasized the importance for Thai people to keep guards up against COVID-19 even though Thailand enjoys 29 consecutive free days from new COVID-19 infection. The Government understands the plight of employers and employees in all sectors, but certain businesses, especially entertainment places, are considered high risk, and additional measures other than those of the Government’s, have to be decided and implemented to prevent the 2nd wave of disease spread. The lockdown has now been eased for domestic tourism, but entry of foreign tourists will have to be carefully deliberated. The Prime Minister also called on both public, private, and business sectors to continue with the work from home measure in a bid to prevent spread of COVID-19, and alleviate morning traffic congestion, particularly when school term starts. Popular Post doctormann
Well, is there Covid in Thailand or not! Can't have it both ways - either there is and we may get a second wave or there isn't, in which case he is worrying about nothing! 33 3 4

So why the worry big Uncle Tu? 20 3

So why the worry big Uncle Tu? Another alternative would be that they do have a clue (even without adequate testing) and they don't want it to get worse. Maybe they are looking at the same data that the NYT and BBC have been watching? 6 1 1

Popular Post uncleP
I have family working in big hospitals. They are not seeing covid. It seems to me we are in the grip of a moral crusade despite girls of the night being more a thai thing than foreign, and against the young for dancing. Let's get this straight the majority of thailands cases came from the army refusing to close a sporting venue 15 8
Popular Post BobbyL
Of course there is a chance of a second wave, however if we are to believe the data released by his government in terms of the numbers of cases (none for 30 days) then places cannot remain shut when there is no virus being spread. Currently, the only way of a second wave hitting is by tourists bringing it in. 6

What would all these wise commentators have to say if it was allowed to re-emerge here? Popular Post DrTuner
Their daily zero cases TV shows have now created a situation where Thais start flipping the bird to all precautions. Even if there is an actual outbreak later. Moral of the story: If you're going to do BS, align all your BS together. 5
Popular Post spidermike007
A sheer power grab. These guys cannot get enough control. This incompetent should have been worried alot earlier when the army sponsored that boxing event at Lumpini. Was the officer in charge ever brought to trial? Was Prayuth dismissed? Of course not. They are all above the law. Only us plebs are not, and we are subject to their bizarre decisions. 15 1

There seems to be an elevation year around. I'll try to dig into the data a bit more thoroughly to remove systematic bias, to see if there was indeed an anomaly from the seasonal and annual variations. I think BBC did that already though, as their numbers do not match the raw data average. BBC has a lower figure. Here's the link for those with time on their hands, courtesy of New York Times (Source is also DoPA): https://github.com/nytimes/covid-19-data/blob/master/excess-deaths/deaths.csv Edited June 25, 2020 by DrTuner

If you did a proper analysis it would be much covid 19 higher

Guderian
He's evidently read about the latest case from Taiwan, after two months with no community transmission. I don't know how these things happen, and nor do Mr. P. and his advisors I suspect, so if they want to stay C19-free they have to err on the side of caution. Whether or not Thailand should be following a strategy of trying to stay C19-free is a political matter at the end of the day, so there's bound to be a lot of disagreement.

Let's not be hasty shall we? If there is no vaccine, countries who were the most cautious in the early phase such as Thailand will be winners in the long term in all respects, health, economy and peace of mind. This story has a long way to play out yet and countries like USA has shown what happens when you don't take it seriously and even S Korea has had a scare or two. The Thai government has been and are continuing to be very prudent in my opinion. For now the economy is functioning and the population is at low risk. I wonder what it would take to make some members here not moan all the time? 1

Thailand's data on the cause of death in the certificates is pretty bad. In cases where people die at home, which seems to be the majority (I'll dig into that too now that I have data), the cause is sometimes entered as what the relatives say, etc. Without exhuming the bodies, which is impossible as they were burned, we'll never get the true facts. Have to go by partial data and make assumptions.

As its turned out they made some really poor decisions on behalf of their citizens because exposing more people to danger didn't improve their economies anyways so people died for nothing..
