Old Wive's Tales told by Expats about Thailand. How many can you list?

Featured Replies

Stadtler gets tired of the same old nonsense brought out and stroked by the expats who live here.

Copy and paste the list as it grows and add to it.

Stadtler will start off the list:

1. You will never get your deposit returned for a condo or home in Thailand.

Stadtler is a bit unlucky with the first item of the list since Sundown got robbed by nice and smiling Thai landlord of 44k not later than 3 months ago ????

Stadtler has gotten all his deposits returned. He isn't saying it cannot happen, but he also does not believe it is the norm.

Stadtler writes his own lease and it must be both in English and Thai.

I’ll add to that Sundown, 3 homes rented, each with 2 month deposit, total deposit was kept every time.  After that I bought my home!!

If it never happened to Stadtler it's doesn't mean it's nonsense, I guess. ????

p.s: Stadtler should know that any kind of paperwork in any language cannot be enforced by a useless falang in the land of smiles ????

There are too many to list, but let's start with some of the conspiracy theories that old farts on bar stools make:

1) the Baht is artificially propped up so a few "hi-sos" can go shopping and buy condos for cheap in Europe, screw the economy!

2) Thai immigration is trying to rid the country of foreigners entirely, even though it would mean they'd be out of a job

3) Thailand is trying to follow in the footsteps of North Korea

And probably 10000 more

2) You will always be a dirty farang virus risk to Thais no matter how much you wash said by a shining example of an old wife????

Not true.

Deposit has nothing to do with old wives tales.

Stadtler usually writes in ultra correct Oxford English. Today not. 4 errors in the headline only.

Stadtler either enjoyed the alcohol ban too much or he set a trap.

Stadtler is sure, that this should have a number in front.

Stadtler never imbibes. Stadtler has no sense of humour, especially when it has to deal with anything regarding Stadtler.  Stadtler would never think to set a trap or trip up any of the fine upstanding individuals here at TV.

Stadtler is not operating the computer; his caretaker does that - which is why the posts always refer to Stadtler in the third person.

Stadtler considers throwing a bone to those who really want to know.

I've rented 2 condos and 2 houses, lost the 6k deposit on one house.

I think Stadtler would do good in ending the silly third person speak about himself. Just one question. Why do you write your own lease? Just buy a condo in your name. Much easier!

Rented three times, deposits returned in full each time.

But adding to the list:

1 - If you marry a Thai you will lose everything in a divorce.

2 - The value of the Baht is manipulated for the benefit of the elite.

3 - If all expats withdrew their money from Thailand the economy would be seriously damaged.

4 - Thai banks are unsafe.

I think #2 is partially correct. Its my belief that Thailand is trying to reduce its dependance on tourism (certainly the lower end of the market) and move towards a more sustainable economy. As for those working in Thaialnd, I've heard anecdotally of foreigners being forced out of longterm employment.

Slightly off-topic, but it is beyond me why property renters don't simply amortise the deposit they have paid, over the period of the lease.  Either commit the figure to memory or write it down, but internalise the new figure somehow. Then, if the deposit is not returned, much angst and heartache, hand-wringing and gnashing of teeth, will be avoided.

Imagine the corollary,  the elation and happiness one will feel should this deposit be unexpectedly returned!

There will be those that insist that, because a deposit is returnable, they have every right to expect it to be repaid.  Wise up, guys, we live in the real world.  You may be in for a rude awakening!

If your in an accident your always to blame because if the farang was not there no accident would happen.

Unfortunately been in accidents (not my fault) was never blamed.

Never loan money to a Thai girl it will be seen as a gift and never returend. Just loaned 800k 2 weeks ago to my ex and guess what it was returned this weekend. It just shows you need to know who you can trust.

It's a pity that Sundown didn't see Stadtler's qualification "never".
