PHUKET:-- Key Phuket tourism figures have outrightly dismissed the claim by a senior Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) marketing official that the “worst is over” for economic impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that it will take a year for the island’s tourism industry to recover.

Tanes Petsuwan, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, early this month called the current situation the “worst crisis in Thai tourism history”.

“I have been working for TAT for more than 30 years, during which we have faced many crises; such as, SARS, Bird Flu, MERS, the tsunami, even our own political crises, but we have seen nothing like this,” he told a panel discussion on the future of Thai tourism held at The Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT) on July 1.

TAT Marketing is living in their own little bubble, with their own reality.

They also repeatedly keep reporting that “This is the best time to make it right,” he said. “We have to move away from quantity to quality.”.

But how would they do that? And is anything being done?

It seems like the only solution in TAT's mind is to open up to the Chinese hordes as quick as possible, and the whole cycle repeats again.

It's a desaster in Phuket now, as the island relys and depends on the tourists' money.

Yes, there have been by far too many Chinese who have driven out Western tourists.

It would be a chance for a change to the better, as it was after Tsunami, but won't happen.

The Chinese will flock in again for sure 1st.

What was the change for the better after 2004?

Yesterday the country was considering opening up the country to certain countries with low virus rates. Today they think that the idea of tourist bubbles is too great so this idea appears to have been abandoned. TAT is too scared to make decisions so how can the tourism industry plan for the future yet alone recover.

T.A.T can't plan beyond what they want for lunch, let alone sort out long term tourism plans.
