I swtiched from True VDSL to 3BB fiber last year and have been generally satisfied however, with multiple devices running (TV's, 2 phones, laptops, ect) the signal does seem to bog down at times.  The router provided by 3BB is a small Huawai "EchoLife HG1845V5" and I wonder if I would be better off with a better grade of router.

First question is; am I even allowed to replace my 3BB supplied router or is it a closed system, requiring components supplied by them?  Do I need to ask permission from 3BB to replace my router?

If I can replace it, what are some of the better units available locally in Bangkok?  My apartment is a large 75 s/m studio so no interior walls to deal with.

However I am on 3BB vdsl 3 years

I never used or installed their router , as use my own  all in on TPlink TD-W9970 , so I think they have at least no objection to use your own , unless because in case fiber different needs ,depend all from which type you have /use

I used to have the (even older) HG8045H router which was upgraded to the HG8145V (like yours) after I complained about only being able to achieve a download speed of about 520Mbps (I am on 1000/500 package). I now have the HG8145V in bridge mode connected to an ASUS AC86U router which handles the routing and the WiFi, and this works very well, giving download speeds of around 940Mbps. If I were you, I would get 3BB to come out and investigate, the technicians are pretty good where I live.

NB. Those speeds are using Ethernet Cat6 cabling NOT WiFi.

Talk to 3BB. You can upgrade, usually for free, to a better modem/router that has both 2.4 and 5.0 Gbps Wi-Fi.

The HG8145V already has 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi.

Sorry, I was misled by the fact that it only has two antennae. My Fibrehome has four.

The OP lists mobiles, TVs, laptops, so his disappointment may be due to expecting too much from Wi-Fi.

We have the same EchoLife HG1845V5 device. Mornings the WiFi was ok but by the evening it would slow to 3 Mbps with frequent disconnections especially if the weather was hot. If I rebooted the device that would help for a little while. I bought an ASUS router and connected it to the HG1845V5 device and that fixed the problem. Another problem we had with the HG1845V5 is it blocks access to the time service Windows uses to keep the time synced for our laptops/PCs. I posted a fix for that a while back.

That's a good point.  I should use the ethernet port for streaming.  It's just that it's an inconvenient long cable run at the opposite end of the apartment.

This sounds like a good solution.  I'm going to try using the ethernet port on the streaming device and see how that works first.

Thanks everybody for all the good imput.
