Racehorse owners in Nakhon Ratchasima province are calling on the government to lift the ban on horse racing after the tracks have been closed for more than five months due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Phutthiphat Phongchaisakul, president of Nakhon Ratchasima Race Horse Owners’ Association, and some racehorse owners visited Government House on Monday (August 3) to submit a letter addressed to the premier asking that the government consider lifting the ban on racing so owners can start earning again.

“Due to Covid-19, racing tracks in the province have been shut down since March 7, resulting in no income for horse owners, who need to spend about Bt20,000 a month per horse to keep it healthy and ready for racing,” he said. “This covers the horse’s food, medicine, equipment and staff salaries.

“Horse and track owners are willing to comply with all measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 once races are allowed,” he added.

The letter was accepted by Sompas Nilapund, deputy permanent secretary to the Office of the Prime Minister, who said it will be forwarded to the relevant agency.

Did not know there was horse racing in Nakhon Ratchasima. Will have to go when the track(s) reopen. I had been under the impression that there were only 2 tracks in Bangkok.

I'm not sure that there are 2 tracks any more in Bangkok, the Royal Turf Club shut its doors in 2018 when the Crown Property Bureau terminated its lease. At the time they said they would look for a venue to build a new course but I don't think that has happened.

For reference (quote from Wikipedia):-

Today, seven of eight racecourses throughout the country remain operational. In addition to the two in Bangkok, there are racecourses in Nakhon RatchasimaUdon ThaniKhon KaenRoi Et and Chiang Mai provinces. (The one in Maha Sarakham has since closed down.)[1]

Thanks, will follow up. Race horses were a very expensive passion in a past life.

Despite all the covid woes, racing in Australia has continued the whole time, turnovers up with all the people locked up at home punting ????

Zero cases in people directly involved in industry, just goes to show with some care and good management it ain't rocket science

Plenty of food for the locals to eat.

Probably a relief for the poor horses.

Thais cannot take care of dogs let alone race horses.
