Transfer Car Ownership - What is the process

Looking to purchase a car here in Thailand.  In the USA you get a title and the owner has to sign over the title in front of a notary.  You then can take the title to the Department of Motor Vehicles and they transfer to your name.   How does the process work here in Thailand.  I know there is a book, but what does a person do in order to guarantee that they get good title to the car?
