A Thai TV Channel 3 presenter said that the first question of on-scene reporters to a female pick-up driver who survived a road accident in Rayong was:

 

"What amulet are you wearing?"

 

Not surprising - her escape and that of several others fit neatly into the "miracle escape" narrative of the media.

 

Incredibly the woman was able to reply before she was taken to hospital. 

 

CCTV from one angle and dash cam footage from another showed the moment a dust cart being driven at high speed careened out of control at a bend in Mapkha sub-district on Saturday afternoon. 

 

Arunee, 35 was in the pick-up that was totally destroyed. 

 

Fifteen year old boy Chawanan on the motorcycle will have a story to tell for the rest of his life. He was only slightly hurt.

 

Mongkhon, 29, was behind the steering wheel of the six wheel dust cart that was on its way to the dump.

 

All three were taken to Nikhom Pattana Hospital.

 

A fourth person in the dust cart did not need hospital treatment. 

 

Even a dog got wise to the impending disaster, notes Thaivisa, fleeing the scene just in time. 

 

And the amulet? It was a "Hoi Luang" from Wat Lahanrai.

The kid on the scooter and the guy in the pick up must have some impressive karma built up ! It looks like the kid should have been flattened underneath the garbage truck. Not sure how he escaped that.
And the guy in the pick up was just as lucky from the looks of it. Top of the truck sheared off, he must have ducked just in time to keep his head from joining the top of his truck.

The driver of the garbage truck should be able to escape punishment by the standards recently set by the Thai justice system though. After all, it's not like he killed a cop or anything. Probably just has to lay low for a couple years and ignore any summons to appear in court and then wait for the charges to be dropped.

Oh wait, he probably doesn't come from a rich family so no deal for him !

One wonders, after a major accident, and one that was likely his fault, can a Thai truck driver ever get a driving job again? I see these huge trucks having been driven into the deep gully in the middle lanes all the time, or overturned on the side of the road. Or driven straight into a concrete post. Or worse, causing a major accident and killing others. Drunk, sleeping or just reckless? Utter lack of driving skills?

 

Sometimes millions of baht in damage between the truck and the cargo. Will they ever be hired again? There has to be some sort of database. References?

I'd wager (if it where legal ????)  that there is no database  and even if there was  publishing names could fall foul of the draconian "defamation" laws.

I'm glad everyone is safe now the other side of the coin which needs to be addressed?  What are they going to do with this driver and drivers like him which are many! Before he learned to drive this truck he learned on a motorbike how many escape will he have before he kills someone!

....agreed..the guy on the bike (no helmet) was lucky his helmet didnt hit the dog that lived in the house that Jack built...it was all happening wasn't it.
