Noodle vendor faces jail for jibe about overweight customer

A 24 year old woman who went out with friends for some noodles on Monday returned home to find that a picture of her had been posted on Facebook.

She recognised the poster as the man who had taken her money.

The man posted: "Sorry everybody but when I saw this female customer I thought what a great figure my wife has". This was followed by three emojis.

The post was widely shared.

She went to the Thung Lung police in Hat Yai southern Thailand to file a defamation complaint saying she had been eating at the noodle cart in Luan Kaew Uthit Road.

National police spokesman Pol Col Krissana Pattanacharoen said that such a case could see the poster face a 2 year jail term and/or a 200,000 baht fine for defamation.

He told people to be careful what they post on social media and said that members of the public that were wronged in this way had every right to go to the police for action.

The lady in question was described by Naew Na in the headline as fat and the man as a bully.

The first poster on the story Wirat Saelor said: "We Thais like to poke fun at others and think it's amusing. This guy needs to be prosecuted to teach him a lesson".

Others agreed he had gone too far though some suggested that the police had more important things to do.

Safety nets or "laws" apply differently to falangs--depending on wallet size...or maybe is just me

Aint that the truth especially behind people's backs or when they think you can't understand them.

They don't find it so funny when when you call them out about it though.

No backbones.

Maybe she was referring to that canned fish...

Certainly a mean thing to say, but....jail time?  Come on.  She certainly isn't skinny.  Maybe this will motivate her to drop a few pounds.

But, there might be a chance a cute chick might find them handsum!

Who knows?

She was in the public eye, she ought to be prosecuted for that alone. for a moment I considered scratching out my eyes when I first saw the picture.

It just shows how ridiculous their defamation laws are... Truth is not enough to get you out of the charge

They don't like it up 'em, do they Jonesy!

Many Thai people I have met think nothing of describing someone

as pumpui, or falang. I am both and the cap fits very well.

Luckily I have enough backbone not to let it bother me, as it

isn't meant in spite, like it would be back home, different cultures

and all that.

This has only become a police matter as it was posted on social media

and probably falls under the libel laws, although the complainants name

or face don't appear to have been published, so maybe the vendor will

get off.

So if this is so the truth, then Anutin should be in court and almost on his way to prison for what he said about us foreigners..

Such thin skin reflects a tremendous deficit of character, self esteem, self love and knowing your place in the world. Hope this woman is able to sort out her life. She needs alot of help.

Freedom of Speech, and Speaking the Truth.

That Now comes under Braking the Law.

They should Scrap that anyone can Sue for Anything.

There Must be a Reasonable Reason to be able to put forward a Case.

Something is missing in this news article, ie the answer to the obvious question: "What action did the police take in this case?"

Please don't laugh at people with weight problem. It's cruel to do so. They can't help it really.

When I was at puberty in school I was underweight so what I did I ate throughout the day , really high calories foods, it took me about 2 years before I gained some weight and looked better in T-shirt.

Why is this 24 year old girl the butt of cruel jokes?     "We support 'em all, big or small.":whistling:

This reminds me of an incident in my former life, in Bulawayo, Rhodesia. Sitting in a restaurant, a "traditionally built" American lady (of non-African descent) came in looking for somewhere to sit. The chairs were all of the welded metal rod and mesh variety, quite comfortable, some with arms, some not.

The lady was offered an armless seat by the African waiter. This she volubly declined, insisting on one with arms, which she occupied with some difficulty.

After consuming an enormous meal, and paying the bill, she tried to leave. Unfortunately, she could not get out of the chair...... her hips were so wide they were trapped by the arms! It took 3 staff members to lever the chair off her behind, amidst much grunting, heaving, and amusement.

Loss of face? I should say so!

nothing really to do with her being a chunk of bully beef

 - but that the Poster violated the electronic media laws to do it...

Of course they can help it.

There were no fat prisoners in Belsen.

Or Kanchanaburi.

The police should be charging her with "Cruelty to plastic stools"!   That's one of the reasons I left Oz to reside in Thailand...the lack of pig dogs to assault my eyeballs was a pleasing change from the horrors to be seen in Oz.
