webfact
76 people killed on Thai roads on Tuesday, 483 killed in August - year's fatalities top 8,500 Picture: Daily News Daily News reported yet more appalling carnage on the nation's roads. Dead at the scene of accidents on Tuesday were another 76 people. This brought the fatality figure for the first 11 days of August to 483. The total for 2020 stands at 8,516. Many more will have died after deaths on the way to and at hospitals are added to the tally. The death toll on the Thai roads has been accepted by government figures as being in excess of 20,000 annually and some estimates put the figure at between 24-26,000, notes Thaivisa. Reporting on the latest deaths in an ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the carnage, Daily News said that a Mitsubishi Triton driven by a 63 year old man had hit a power pole in Muang district of Buriram. Picture: Daily News It burst into flames and locals managed to extricate the driver before he was incinerated. He was alive and taken to hospital. His wife later went to the police and said that he had been tired from work. It is thought he fell asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle. Picture: Daily News The media warned the Thai public about driving while tired. Huge signs that say in Thai "Nguang Jort Phak" (sleepy, take a rest) have been erected on the highways all over Thailand in recent years in an effort to combat this, notes Thaivisa. Popular Post ezzra
Scary figures indeed, and the more holidays and extra, extended off days the government gives willy nilly to the people just to look good more the higher the dead and injured toll will be 8

Popular Post Scot123
Question to thai government: Why all the fuss over a virus that maybe killing a couple of people in thailand when you have a mass murderer "Thai Roads"? The reaction to a virus if transferred to roads would mean closing all roads and returning to buffalo carts. 30 6

Popular Post Pilotman
This report does not provide comparative figures. A daily monthly or annual figure is a bit meaningless without context. How does Tuesday compare to other holiday days, how do the annual figures compare to previous years, how many of the dead were on motorbikes, what is the age profile of those who have died, what locations are more deadly? Without those comparative numbers, this report is not even interesting, let alone useful in drawing conclusions. 5 2 3

Emdog
Not including those who die in hospital is typically insane. "Thailand had the world’s second-highest rate of road fatalities per capita.." (2015 numbers) "The government vowed at a United Nations forum in 2015 to halve the number of road traffic deaths by 2020." So much for vows.... US has 36k deaths last year Thailand maybe 25k, numbers game USA is about 5x population of Thailand.... https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/19/world/asia/thailand-inequality-road-fatalities.html

Something basic is missing. IT is about time that the authorities realised that they could cut road accidents by half simply by burying all power cables and of course removing these highly suicidal power poles.

crickets
Driving on public holidays is horrible.....had to swerve twice from pickups travelling on the wrong side of the road speeding on Tuesday. I usually keep the family of the road and wont let the wife drive far during them. Most accidents occur because of not one stupid person but two coming together at the same time. see it so often.
