Pattaya: Swede racks up 100,000 baht in hospital bills after chasing snatch thief who stole 60K necklace

A Swedish/Thai couple regret chasing a motorcycle snatch thief who grabbed a 60,000 necklace as they rode their motorbike in Pattaya.

 

They ended up coming off the bike and were both seriously hurt. 

 

The Swedish man has racked up 100,000 in medical bills and has still not recovered.

 

Now they have gone to the media as the police investigation has gone nowhere well over a month after the incident. 

 

Gustav A., 72, was driving his motorcycle with his wife Sombun, 57, riding pillion in the area of Soi Khao Talo on July 7th.

 

A motorcyclist dressed in black with a helmet grabbed Gustav's two baht weight gold necklace and raced off. There were no plates on the thief's bike.

Gustav gave chase, Sombun told Pattaya Update News, but because he was unfamiliar with the route the couple came off and were both seriously injured. 

 

They went to the Nong Prue police who obtained CCTV footage but in repeated visits to the investigators they are just told to keep waiting. 

 

Now they want the media to help chivvy the police along. 

 

Sombun said her husband's medical fees have reached 100,000 baht and there is more to come as he has not fully recovered.

 

She needs to take care of him such as taking him to the toilet because he can hardly walk on his own.

 

She said their income is only 30,000 baht a month.

 

She said they regret chasing the thief accepting that he could have been armed as well as the dire consequences they have faced from coming off their motorcycle. 

 

They don't want the same fate to befall others.

Bad luck. Though not really intelligent to be wearing 2 baht of gold around your neck at this time.

It's going to tempt someone. In this case, it did.

Also a waste of time and energy going to the police. Even if they catch him, their money is long gone.

Haven't they seen the cases of the man who absconded with 358k of takings from a petrol station and the other with 200k from a temple.

Nothing or next to nothing recovered.

His gold will go the same way. Distributed to various charities and benevolent funds.

Now is not the time to be showing off your wealth, especially if you are not wealthy.

Get well soon and in the future, don't be so stupid.

Can't recall how many times have we read about people being warned about wearing gold chains driving on motor bikes here on Thai Visa 

Especially over this period with lots of people being destitute and with  nothing to lose by stealing 

They are asking for trouble

Then what? They would then have lost 165,000 baht. The chances of getting the chain back is close to zero, unless the gold shop owner or pawn shop is willing to take the loss.

Of course I might have got it all wrong; with the thief deciding to wear it as a trophy, after getting it fixed.

The best they can do is to name and shame and possibly bring some trouble to the miscreant. But likely no money will be forthcoming. Do they imagine that he will be able to cough up the 165k?

Poor judgement from the beginning. Thinking that it could never happen to him and then chasing recklessly. Furthermore still hoping to retrieve their former asset.

Agree they are not to blame for the theft.

 

But the decision to put 60k into jewelry rather than health insurance or setting money aside for medical bills.....

 

I certainly do not own any piece of jewelry worth remotely that much. I do however pay for good health insurance. These are choices.

When you are a poor swede living from a minimum wage pension from the government don't try to impress people around you to believe you are rich by wearing a 2 bath gold chain to prove it.  

I guess he have learned his lesson the hard way and avoid his "show off" stupidity in the future.

By the way, as usual no sympathy or help from the Pattaya police without a well stuffed brown envelope.

Nothing new here, next robbery of falang please.
