Thai Tourism Is Recovering, But Not Restored: Think Tank

BANGKOK, Aug 31 (TNA) — The Thai tourism is recovering but has not been restored to its normal level yet, according to the Economic Intelligence Center of Siam Commercial Bank which urges for more stimulus measures.

EIC stated that tourism-related data showed that domestic tourism was improving, especially in provinces near Bangkok. However, the business is still far below its condition before business lockdowns. The center also pointed out that tourism remained vulnerable regarding the risk of the second COVID-19 spread.

EIC predicted that the tourism sector would continue to be sluggish despite eased lockdowns. It explained that foreign tourists have not returned. Besides, domestic tours by Thai people have not been full-scale and they naturally spend much less than foreign tourists.

I suppose it's irony, but I don't understand why ??

Article is talking about "domestic tourism was improving"

and that's exactly what people report in places like Chonburi or Pattaya by example.

So yes, how could you know this without such articles and reports ??

You filling rooms with Thais at 40-60% discounts on rooms 'may' get you through a low season, but those same hotels need a good 4-5 months of high season Xmas, New Year and Chinese new year to make a profit and not close.

Looking at the hotel and tourism industry after denying any meaningful tourism until after Chinese New year may well show you that this domestic tourism now just delayed the inevitable

With tourism non existent for almost half year, that would mean a 100% drop. Naturally it´s recovering because it can not get worse.

I assume they are talking about domestic tourism. Mean they are only missing 40 million real tourists.

To me that seems like giving aspirin to a cancer patient and wait for the result.

Good job Think Tank!

Someone at MCOT just took a bit out of this report out of context that he thought sounded vaguely positive and published it, under pressure from his bosses to find positive news stories about the great recovery without significant help from government that is too busy transferring taxpayers money to accounts in Singapore.

Of course tourism can’t recover without tourists but why let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Scary thing is i've got money with this lot......  let's hope they're smarter at banking......

How does one get a job at the EIC ?

Who writes this stuff ? The tourist industry has been destroyed, and is going to get even worse as more and more businesses are forced to close down. The only way to "cure" it is to drop the quarantine requirement, drop the $100K insurance policy requirement, and stop ripping us off. Luckily more and more people are realizing that this whole thing is a gigantic scam, as shown by the huge protests in London and Germany. Sweden is the only country so far with the intelligence to ignore all the hype and spin. Every country should follow suit.

Ironically the only tourist segment for which Thailand has a competitive edge over all other destinations are the tourists the government claims it wants to de-emphasise, I.e. the sex tourists. All other tourists can find comparable tourism offerings elsewhere. It is predictable that Thailand will have to become more reliant on sex tourism after re-opening.

Can a think tank think without a tank? What happens when the tank is full of thoughts? Think about it,... thanx.

As an "analyst" at SCB's Economic "Intelligence" Center you actually draw a salary for pointing out the obvious.

As a normal mortal pointing out the very same, you get zip, zilch, nada.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the difference.
