Police get their hands on haul of opium in Mae Hong Son border

After receiving a tip-off, police officers and soldiers decided to lie in wait for smugglers near a natural border between Mae Hong Son and Myanmar.

Their wait paid off because just after midnight on Monday (September 21) they managed to swoop down on a 42-year-old Myanmar national carrying close to 5 kilograms of opium in his backpack.

The suspect was later taken to the border patrol police camp for interrogation and was charged with possessing illegal narcotics.

More drugs are being smuggled into Thailand since they no longer fetch a high price in Myanmar.

Idiotic analysis. Since the 1960's, the overwhelming majority of drugs in Myanmar have been produced for export, and Thailand has been their biggest market and gateway to the world.

The Thai police are probably catching more smugglers because some officers need to find news ways to make money now that the easy pickings of tourism have evaporated.

Cop on the right.."I'll stay here and guard the stash, you go get the sangsom-mixers and ice"....and the girls

Looks more like some head stash for a local village if still opium paste.

Every time I read of a drug  bust, it makes me happy that not all of the drugs

are getting to their destination.

Geezer

5 kg caught, but the real package had

89752098743895743985043758943057984  kg  that was in the tunnel only 1 km from that picture.

or the new invisible drones

Didn't it say "hands off" on the boxes ?

While a mule train with 500 Kgs of YaBa, made its way across the border

2 Km away ????, they will sacrifice one man for the big load to get through.

Makes me sick with rage at the waste of police resources fighting against individual liberties to support Nixon insane, oppressive War on Drugs which is possibly the worst international law ever pursued. 5 kilos is nothing. And opium is benign compared to meth. In the old days part of doing a jungle trick was smoking opium in a village.

A "jungle trick" or did you mean a "jungle trek"?

I always took my "tricks" with me on jungle treks.

Seriously though, you're quite right, fun times in those days.

Then along came the War on Drugs which changed the scene dramatically with speed, coke and designer drugs replacing opium and ganja.

When I first came here in the late '70s, ganja was almost as easy to buy as beer. It was everywhere... in the cities, in the countryside, on the islands and in hilltribe villages.

It was no big deal, just something that had been around since forever and used as medicine, for recreation and as a condiment in monkey-ball soup.

And I'm glad when the stash gets through. It should ALL be legal!

So people here think that opium is a harmless drug?  Talk to some

workers who see the opium, or at least heroin users who die

from their overdoses.  Mary jane or the ganga stuff, is softer,

but enough of my friends and relatives who are dead from the

other heavy shiite has made me hate heroin, and the other cocktails

that have killed off lots of users. Fentinal and that kind of stuff is not

something to fool around with.
