End of Buddhist Lent- Dry or not

Featured Replies

I have 100Bht riding on this!

TV Holidays states that tomorrow, 1st October, is dry but the misses insists no and that everything is open.  Who is right.

It's the money bet I am worried about, not the booze!

Honest.

PS;  Talking about CM in particular if it makes any difference.

  • All nonsense, I have yet to meet a real Buddhist here after 26 years, why should we have to suffer these holidays and dry days for a bunch of hypocrites?

Usually the end of the Buddhist lent is just a regular day with alcohol sales as normal. Not heard any different this year?

A ‘dry’ day to celebrate the end of what is for many Buddhists a ‘dry’ period?

What you think if Thai man not drink in 3 month (before maybe heavy drinker) he not take Lao Khao tomorrow!?

That is what I assumed going by your holidays list, which I always consult.  The problem is that Phuket say tomorrow is dry day but my other half, my tuk tuk driver and the local 7/11 say they know nothing about a dry day today or tomorrow!

Correct. We had lunch at Wine Connection, Central Festival, Chiang Mai, yesterday, 1st October 2020, and all kinds of beer, wine and spirits were available. Today, 2nd October, is a dry day at least up here in the North.

Yes, Foodmart has a notice telling its customers that there will be no alcohol sales on Friday 2nd October due to end of Buddhist Lent.

Number 1 for me ...

The answer to the OP's question is yes and no, depending on if he goes to a large chain store or the local family-run corner shop. As always. Must be a newbie to ask such a question ????

It's not October 1, it's October 2 until 00:00. It doesn't matter if some shops sell or not, they know it's illegal, but don't care. It has nothing to do with Thailand as a country.

How I miss the mom and pop stores.  Besides being able to buy beer whenever, I liked to support Thai owned small businesses, and the owners are usually very friendly.  In the last 10 years it seems like 85-90% of them have closed.  Replaced by 7-11, Family Mart, Super Cheap, Tesco, and Big-C mini marts.

Being in Pattaya currently I can tell you for sure that nothing was dry on Oct 1.
