PM pleased' with report on reduction in poverty last year

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is satisfied with the government's efforts to reduce poverty after a report by the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said the number of poor people in the country had declined last year, government deputy spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul said on Saturday.

 

 

According to the NESDC report on poverty last year, the number of poor people dropped to 6.24 per cent (4.3 million) from 9.85 per cent (6.7 million) in 2018, she added. The report attributed it to the economic expansion and the government's measures to help low-income people.

 

She said that the figure suggested that Thailand had met its goal in the 12th national economic and social development plan, which targets reducing the number of those below the poverty treshold to 6.5 per cent at the end of next year.

 

However, it remains to be seen if Thailand can maintain this pace until the end of next year as this year Thailand is suffering the severe impact of the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, she added.

What is the point in them boasting this at this time? Going by gov response during the pandemic, they clearly do not care for the poor people. Let's see how they spin the figures next year.

Maybe he is, but the poor people of Thailand are not.

Reducing poverty for geriatric generals and the already bloated elite is not the same as helping reduce poverty for the poor.

When up in rural Isan, I haven't noticed  any drop in poverty. If fact, I'd go so far as to say that not a single thing has changed. So, who are these poor people who have benefited so much?

There may have been a genuine reduction as of the end of 2019 but to make  claim in light of what damage will result from events 2020 and ongoing seems rather meaningless.

As far as I can see there is a world wide transfer of wealth from the poor and middle classes to the rich. Seems little has changed from the days of feudalism where the wealthy can never be wealthy enough and only feel special if they can tread on the faces of the peasant class. For the majority that aren't sociopaths its hard to understand the mentality.

Bit early/late for an April Fools joke from Prayut. For a balanced story why not tell the people how the Thai Elites wealth has grown every year since you took control.

Once again there is no detail behind the report.

What constitutes "poor" ? What is the sample size? The whole country or just Bangkok? Maybe it was a sample of 10 people?

What was the baseline in 2018 v 2019 ?

Did they take into affect inflation ?

Why do they never let the people scruntise these reports ? Same for TAT.

 

On a difference note, I can't wait to see the report next year!

He was talking about the poor people who are having to work more jobs to make up for what they have lost from there primary job.  Friends who lost their business in Phuket, are now growing flowers on the back side of the property and selling them online as well as in the Talads, while selling off any and all assets they had from the business, just staying afloat.

At the back of my house was an abandoned building site, just one house they started to build they had come out of the ground and that was  it, they left the tin shacks there, a couple of months ago a woman moved into one of them my first thoughts about her is she looked homeless not a construction worker, anyway fair play to her she has tried to make it look nice and planted all sorts of flowers and plants she does get people buying things from her but not enough from what I can see, I think she has also found herself a bit of a job somedays shes gone for a while, good luck to her

Was walking in Thonglor street last night returning from loi kratong and was shocked to see how many of the new tall modern condo buildings priced at starting from 9 to 13 million baht.

 

One wonders who are all the thousands of wealthy people who can afford all these condos wheras at street level one notices the less well off folks manning massage places, restaurants and street food stalls.

You really are something else Steve100! How long is your nose? The reason I ask is that I wonder if you can see past the end of it! These are last years figures so let's wait and see what this years figures look like shall we. I wonder how may million people that will show as no longer having a salary because of the way he handled the economy pre-pandemic (since his illegal coup-de-tat) and the way he is now handling things. There's a saying that goes "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer" which I think your beloved Khun Prayut Chan-o-cha should adopt as his governments slogan.

Like the US.  The total number of people who could work but don't have jobs is over 90 million.
Official "unemployment" is 7.9% as "unemployed" means collecting unemployment benefits.  Once your benefits run out you are no longer "unemployed" ***Magic***  It doesn't mean you are working, you are just not counted as "unemployed".  ***Presto!***
Based on the statistical calculations the BLS used in 1992 the number of "unemployed" suddenly jumps to ~13%, which is why they don't use that measure any longer.

There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.
