Driving licence applications: No new diseases added to forbidden conditions for driving just yet

Sanook reported that the Department of Land Transport has not yet added any medical conditions to the list of those that prohibit driving.

 

The media said there were rumors circulating that diabetes, high blood pressure, seizures and bipolar disorder would be added by next February. 

 

Deputy at the DLT Yongyuth Nakdaeng said that no decision had been taken yet. The matter was still being considered not by the DLT, who lack the expertise, but by qualified medical personnel. 

 

Decisions were expected by February 19th, however. 

 

Other changes that could be in the offing include medical certificates related to driving licences could be sent by doctors online to prevent forgery, said Sanook. 

 

Thaivisa notes that the subject of diabetics being unable to drive is a major issue in Thailand. Online information suggests that in excess of 4 million Thai adults have the condition in one form or another.

Now going on-line to put your medical certificate in the hands of the DLT will definitely stop all of the fake doctors notes if they only allow regular medical hospital doctors to do the physical.  Other than that, it will not change the outcome of you paying some dodgy Soi doctor to do the physical paperwork and put it in the DLT Database.   Diabetes is also a condition that can be treated with medication and controlled, much like a heart condition where medication is also taken.  These people doing the adding of certain diseases that would ban one from driving need to really be true medical personal who have no agenda.

Ridiculous, these diseases can all be treated and under control. As usual, focus is on the wrong issue. 

How about 'lack of brains' and 'blindness?

in Thailand they often as not go untreated. 

I renew next month 5 years------not trying to hijack the thread but is it just before or just after you go , that gives you an extra year?........Thanks

 

Up here in Sukon nowhere, its not unusual to see a 13 year old driving a bike of 4 kids to school, completely ignored by police....even my wife says  "well how else are they going to get to school"

We can be sure that a hiso with  bipolar on meths and disregulated insulin dependet diabetes will pass any test any day of the week. While some poor soul with slightly hypertension will flunk.

Some years ago in the UK I had an head on crash with a car that left its lane (2 way road) and headed directly for me. Fortunately busy and not therefore fast. 

The driver turned out to be diabetic who hadn't taken his insulin. 

Diabetea and high blood pressure ?? Wft ??

Is thailand a so primitive country ??? They should clear the own maid vehicle , which selling foods accross thailand and too much tuck tuck !  These both make a lot trafic jam and increase bad climate !

And I wonder how many more millions are afflicted with high blood pressure, a condition that is in no way a valid reason to prevent people from driving.

 

What's next? Excluding people with heart or circulatory diseases who have no record of any serious episodes? With eye glasses or contact lenses? People suffering from allergies or seasonal hay fever (you know, when you sneeze you could well lose control of your vehicle)?

 

I know... why not ban just about EVERYONE from obtaining a driving license? That might actually help bring down the appalling traffic death toll. At least somewhat because most people would continue driving even without a license.  

 

What is the point, too many Thais drive without a license anyway so it will not affect them, all this will mean is more & more will be driving without a license if they fail a medical - one again a real lack of a deterrent ....LOL

If they added "stupidity"  that  would remove most Thai drivers

Yes they can all be treated, it they go to a hospital get diagnosed and take medication.. sadly this is not the case which is why we have thousands of people driving on the roads with conditions un-treated.

That doesn't count those that just cannot drive, those that are under the influence of drugs or alcohol or those that are mentally unstable, stressed, in a bad mood or whatever it takes to cause accidents, the list is endless.

P.S. Not counting un-roadworthy vehicles.

I have similar concerns especially with younger children riding motorbikes, however your wife probably has a point.

The majority cannot afford a car, there is no public transport and both parents have to work.

I often think it is easy to be critical particularly when both my wife and I have a car and each is fitted with a European child safety seat.

so driver was diabetic ONE....there are millions who are diabetic two......

I think that will wipe out 80 percent of ex-pats drivers licences.  

The buffalo will have to walk won't they?  That's not a bad thing necessarily.
