BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is to enact a plan spanning campaigning, preventing and remedying PM 2.5 ahead of an expected surge in air pollution during the December to January period.

Permanent Secretary of Agriculture and Cooperatives Thongplew Kongchan said today the plan involves stopping slash and burn farming and will intensify from December 1st to May 31st next year. The nine provinces to receive particular attention are Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Nan, Payao, Mae Hong Son and Tak. Three measures have been approved to address crop burning.

The first is prevention through campaigning to generate awareness and actions to deter burning.

The second is the provision of information and equipment via ministry agencies that will counteract the need for crop burning. Operational centers will be set up at the provincial level to carry out efforts to prevent burning.

The third measure will see the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation and Royal Irrigation Department combatting PM 2.5 directly.

A working group on preventing burning on farms has passed a plan for 2021 in support of the overall effort.

What a joke! Ban burning. The damage to the land and health isnt justified. This is im guessing 90% caused by sugar cane that the government is pushing farmers to produce and always making new factories to accommodate just to make ethanol thats added to fuel and sold as eco friendly. How so? Its cleaner for our health and environment with out it.

STOP right there u wa-nker...........I  live in a  village, I was told  NOT to burn my  crop, I spent another 10k not  burning and ploughing it  back in, dont mind doing that. Within a month  other neighbours burnt theirs, no complaints  made by anyone , yet I was singled out to be told not to burn.

Wife was  told by head of  village "burn it at night" .....see how it  all works here.

I recommend the Govt minister uses my approved method to help with  PM2. 5 it serves 2  purposes...........1 if you cant see it it aint there 2  if  you tie it tightly round the neck we dont have to listen to your utter sh-ite again

Agree their plan is a joke..

stop burning...it’s a lost cause when your plan is to deal with the burning that had already occurred...

the will of the government is not there to tackle the problem...

The 4th measure should be remove the governor if any fires are lit.

Measures 1-3 would become irrelevant.

After issuing the edict when the gagging smoke reappears, like every year, they'll be wondering where it came from, mustn't have been agriculture after all, had to have blown in from another country.

I'll give you a simple suggestion that will work. Pay the farmer xxx baht not to burn their land. I'm sure people suffering from the pollution in the nearby cities would donate plenty just to breath some fresh air for a change.

Give them the equipment to compost and turn it into the soil.  Make sure everyone has access, then levy large fines to those that still burn.  Pretty much the entire country burns though, even in BKK.

They also need a serious and prolonged PR campaign about burning, and trash as well.
