‘Old car for new car’ project decision delayed to next week

Details of the proposed “old car for new car” scheme are being finalised and will be revealed to the public next week, according to the Industry Ministry.

The Finance Ministry is currently studying the proposal, which would see car owners offered coupons worth Bt100,000 in tax relief on purchases of new cars.

The trade-in scheme was proposed earlier this month by the Industry Ministry as a way of boosting the auto sector during the economic crisis. However, automakers warned it could dampen sales and lead to stagnation of the industry as car owners would delay buying a new car until they hear what kinds of old car are covered by the scheme.

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) is expected to announce the full details of the scheme next week.

Probably end up like the last brilliant car buying scheme, lots of new cars that people cannot really afford because they are saving a few 100,000 baht.

I understand this is a tax relief, not a straight Bt100,000 refund, so it will be the best paid workers and good earning business men/women , that will benefit the most.

This sticks of help for the military and their voter base the middle and upper class who get free money at Christmas every year in their shop/tax present now this. This doesn't help the poor farmers or the poor scraping a daily subsistence living. Mr T did it best with the actual tax cut on new pickups which the poor could use as recreational and earn money with.

Banks are getting desperate for ringing up more and more credit. Things are getting bad

More cars on the road, more pedestrians, more drivers-not-paying-attention, more drivers drunk or on drugs, more accidents, more weak, and sick, are culled = more ambulances, more tow trucks, more police employed, more hospital and morgue business.

Sounds like a win !
