Live grenades discovered in wildlife sanctuary

Ten grenades were found in Huai Sala Wildlife Sanctuary in Si Sa Ket province when a local visited the forest area for collecting mushrooms and other natural products.

 

On Friday, the local, Supin Thammaporn, 58, informed what he had seen in the sanctuary to the chief of Phu Sing district, where the sanctuary is located.

 

 

 

The chief then contacted other officials, as well as volunteers, to check the suspected objects.

 

The officials found 10 live grenades. They cordoned off the area and put signs up to warn the locals.

 

The Army was contacted to dispose the bombs of.

I wonder if they will have a bomb suited disposal unit or a robot in the process. Or just pick em up bare handed?

If you head as far as you can in the emerald triangle you reach an army camp with plenty of old deactivated mines, bombs and grenades on display outside the camp. The soldiers there were happy to chat and explained the roads were blocked to further travel due to landmines etc.

 

That whole area along the Khmer border is still littered with unexploded ordinance. It was only a few months ago people were injured by a landmine in the jungle there. Years ago I would regularly hear of people being injured by landmines while searching the jungle for food or wood.

They look more like mortar rounds to me, not grenades.

So , certain mushrooms really can 'Blow Your Mind' then.

Correct, that's what I thought too.. But then I remembered that rifle grenades look similar..

Yes they do look like M69 TP's. Used in training from the M2 - Type 63 variant mortar. I can not believe that they are 'live', the shell was just cast iron and no active filler or explosion cap. Not the best foto to see clearly. The fin arrangement is a dead giveaway it was North Vietnamese, they used it to check ranges and set up gorilla mortar defenses and not spoil the ground with live exploding rounds as to ambush GI's when they pass unsuspectingly.

I don't think Si Saket is close to Laos. There seems to be at least 1 province between them.

Yip, most likely a translation error, but I don't know what 'rocket propelled' grenades look like. They do look suspiciously dangerous and I'm glad they got the Army.

RPG rounds have a long tail which is the rocket motor, unless they were removed.
