Chiang Rai’s governor led a clean-up operation on Thursday, aimed at restoring confidence after dozens of Covid-19 cases were discovered in the northern border province.

Prajon Prachsakul said government officials and volunteers were disinfecting tourist attractions and crowded places such as Chiang Rai Airport, shopping malls, Wat Huai Pla Kang, Wat Rong Khun, Singha Park and the Mae Sai Border Checkpoint.

The move comes after 34 Thai returnees from Myanmar tested positive for Covid-19 after sneaking back across the border into Mae Sai district.

The governor said the disinfection operation was conducted to restore confidence among people visiting Chiang Rai for winter season events such as flower festivals and New Year countdowns.

"It also aims to create awareness on how people can protect themselves against Covid-19, such as by wearing facemasks, washing hands and cleaning their houses regularly," he said.

This cooperation to contain the spread of disease would be the best New Year's gift for people in the province, he added.

These people are Thai.

Why are quote "Thai returnees" having to sneak across the border?

Don't they have legitimate claim to residence in Thailand?

All these stupid photos just for show as always. Why doesn't he point at something?

Just spraying disinfectant, boring. When he "ordered a clean up", I thought he was going to go the full Don Corleone on the illegal border crossers, lol.

They backed down on lawsuit already no spines for punishment

Seems rather haphazard, some wearing masks, some not. Some wearing gloves, some not.

Using water and soap will only distribute the virus, chlorine-based disinfectant is needed to kill it.

If they enter Thailand they have to stay in quarantine first. Not everyone likes this.

It’s all about image that the gov is doing something against a problem that has no bearing on the problem...

the problem is thai gov inability to contain illegal border crossings which we know have gone on since the beginning of time...

image over problem resolution

Maybe the streets need cleaning as they do everywhere....but getting the borders functioning properly would be my priority!
