Thailand faces lockdown if outbreak cannot be contained - PM

We have been incredibly fortunate up to this moment, and while the lockdown we had earlier in the year was unpleasant, it was nowhere near as extreme as some countries have been facing.

I sincerely hope they can contain this outbreak, but am already getting stocks in, in case it goes badly.

Cancelling events to prevent travel is sad, but until we see where this is headed, probably the right move. The New Year family ensembles with millions moving around through the period also has the potential for disaster of course.

What are you stocking in...during the first lockdown, the supermarkets were never short on foodstuffs and household goods...they were even having sales on toilet paper. The only stuff that sold out was masks and alcohol...though bleach, Detol, and other disinfectants were always available.

  • Although I understand if many young people are annoyed with lockdowns and curfews... For me personally, it's actually quite nice. Finally there is some quiet in my bl**dy moban.

Many of the migrants just walk across unguarded borders , or swim/walk across rivers .

Well, that wasn't expected at all....

Given that chances are high I will arrive in Thailand this weekend, what was the last lock down like? I remember there was a curfew, no nightlife, and random foreigners were busted throwing private parties - but were there more restrictions or could you at least go get food and supplies during the day?

We'll be in quarantine until mid-January anyway, but wondering what happens after...

First lockdown wasn't bad like you say...curfew was only ever at nite...22:00-05:00 if I recall. During the day could always go out to markets, restos (takeout) and for emergencies (hospitals and pharmacies). Most non-essential businesses were closed so one could go out during the day but nothing was open.

Thanks for that info. What about air travel between provinces? I get out of ASQ in Bangkok shortly and am supposed to be meeting someone I haven't seen for over a year down in Hat Yai. As another poster rightly said the lockdown decision is not about tourists or expats, but having come this far it'll be a blow not to be able to make the final leg of the journey.

Travel between provinces was banned for a few weeks , buses banned as well

And the fact that they stripped the trained border patrol police from the Myanmar border over and over and moved them to Bangkok to deal with peaceful protests. Prayut should be held personally responsible for this. Beyond incompetent.

You don't know how dangerous to national security 3 fingers can be!

There were also numerous places where you could get free food from Temples/Restaurants/hotels etc

I really hope no expats were doing this. Sort of defeats the purpose of being allowed to remain here.

With all the bars closed, what were the balloon chasers to do?

Just pointing out that he wouldnt starve to death  , and theres no reason to horde food .

(If as a last resort, you did need to get "free" food , you could always make a donation to the source)

...

Don't worry, to get food and supplies haven't and will never be a problem in Thailand

I cancelled a trip to Hua Hin over Christmas because I thought if another lockdown happens, I would not be able to get back to Chiang Rai.

I just hope the provincial government does not close golf courses and swimming pools like they did last time. I'll be happy to comply with closure orders when someone is able to demonstrate a coronavirus cluster at either.

Yes do it before the new year, when everyone floods out of Bangkok and heads for home .........

So do I but you’ve got to get ahead of the virus not wait for it to appear else you’ll end up in the mess Johnson is making in the U.K. !

Gym closure hurt me the most last time followed by golf courses - though in the last lockdown there was always a bar prepared to serve you.

The night curfew in Thailand was pretty nice too

very quiet long nights for sleep and less

deaths and wounded on the roads, a win\win

the most irritating was the closure of the beach

swimming pool and gyms

You could apply that to every country on this planet - why single out Thailand ?

Most bosses in the World would pay their employees the minimum they could pay them .

Supply and demand , and competing with other companies

GF just told me that a load of migrants escaped from where they were being confined in Nakhon Sakhon by breaking down a  wall. Maybe she heard it on the  news or on the net.

Anyone else heard this?

totally agree.

i have seen videos about illegal immigrants of western countries. The business owners know its illegal to employ those people but they still employ them and pay them low salaries to maximise their profits.

Many time the business owner is a citizen/permanent resident of a western country  and he is exploiting people of his country.

It is not about you though. The real losers are the people who' will not be able work and therefore can't pay their bills and feed their children. Another lockdown will be catastrophic for many Thais.

If a lockdown is inevitable, then the way to go should be a tier system like in the UK.

So you think tier system would work here . create another set of rules that no body read and take any notice .god fobid the police enforcing it.........

But who said officials sneaked them in when the border is wide open in many places as well being shared in a few locations.

Yes I agree, don't understand  why they  needed  to close the beach.

Lockdown yes, do it.

Booze ban no, don't do it.

Just in case, that's too not late to start and stock booze ????

Just heard at least one person in Buriram now tested positive. So it seems the gaps  between north and south are slowly but surely being filled. ????

I'm off out this evening to  stock up on some booze  basics and other  things before it officially heads our way too ! Is going to be a quiet stay home New Year for my household !

though the PM was at pains to point out that no blame was being apportioned.

What a surprise, given that the real guilty party is the government itself, which has known all along about the threat posed by migrant workers but has chosen to look the other way for many months. Shame on you, Prayut, an honourable politician would admit they got it wrong and resign, but here in Thailand? As they say, there's no honour among...
