it had not been paid for ,they were still shopping ,the guy is a nutcase

The article says she was wheeling it off to an ATM. Normally the ATMs are not inside the supermarket shopping area, but in the area after went through the cashier and have paid.

That being said, it doesn’t justify kicking someone. It’s pretty clear it’s a mistake; she wasn’t running away and who steals a shopping cart in broad daylight anyway? You politely tell her that that is your cart; she will be incredibly embarrassed and apologize to which you say Mai Pen Rai with a smile on your face. And none of that is even particularly Thai—it’s how you would handle it anywhere in this world.

Whether 30k is justified or not is a different question. He certainly was wrong and deserved to be punished.

I am not so sure it would have been 30,000 if they were both Thai, however, he deserves punishment after his display and should consider himself fortunate that the case is closed.

  • Well that certainly was an expensive shopping trip for him. He is a damn lucky man, that it is not going to court, or he might have been back in the cold in Norway.

  • Im pretty sure had he been Thai it would be a lower amount. But I feel 30k is a good amount he is lucky that he wont get deported. What an idiot I wonder what brought him to do this.

Not disputing the fact that other options were bad, my question is - where did the figure of 30K come from?

The lady apparently asked for 40K and the matter was settled with a counter-offer of 30k. That is typical of the Thai system.

The injured party kicked it off at Bht 40,000..... It was bargained down to thirty. The OP says it quite plainly!!

The articles provides and answer: She wanted 40k, he counter-offered 30k, she agreed to it. Case closed.

Yes i can read however there's not explanation for amount.

Compensation is normally based on loss of earnings ( time not able to attend work ) and / or cost of hospital bills ( couple of bruises? ).

Ubon expat scene is quite small, so many people, both Thai & farang, will either know who is or recognize him. He'll probably be shunned by many and may well get clobbered yet. If he has half a brain he'll relocate or lie very low for a long while.

You are attempting to use Western finance/law logic to Thai cultural practices. She likely asked her cousin SomChai and that's what he said to ask for. This is the way they do it...there is no calculation.

IMO 30K is way way too mutt.

He's Norwegian so probably loaded anyway.

I'd let someone kick me and get a couple bruises every day of the week for 30K a pop.

jeez HBH.. keep up. Asking why the payoff?

Read the story. He left visible marks in a lop-sided attack. Big guy. Small woman.

It's not rocket science...

Do you not agree it's a crazy figure for such minor injuries?

Jeez Bobin,

I'm not asking why the pay off i'm asking why that amount, it's not rocket science to read that, is it?

No....even in the west, damage awards can run two to three times the actual economic loss if it can be shown that pain and suffering (physical and emotional) was caused.

You obviously have NFBI of how things work here. You're not in Kansas now Dorothy.....or wherever it is your basing your knowledge of compensation law on. TIT

If he had kicked a small woman twice (one of them after an apology) in ANY western country it would have cost him a LOT more than a thousand bucks. He WOULD be in jail and his legal expenses would be a minimum of ten times that amount, even if the criminal charges were eventually dismissed or downgraded to a misdemeanor.

He got a BARGAIN.

I can't understand what it takes for another individual to kick another individual.

A simple, Sawadee Krup, this is my trolley, I take it back, no, no, well, this is my receipt, if you like I can call the police and you can explain to them how you managed to have all of these items in this trolley without this receipt, problem sorted.

30,000 baht....what an idiot, serves him right.....deport

Are you one of them?

That could very conceivably happen... maybe not by bigger, but by much better kickers.

He's going to need to move.

If I, in a moment of complete madness, had done such a thing, I wouldn't have bartered with the young lady, I'd have handed over the 40k baht and apologized profusely.
