Tippers, I should have remembered you like themes. Well, I'm gonna run with the birthday or anniversary of their birth in the case where the artist has already croaked, (nearly all of my musical heroes).

Ray Manzarek born in Chicago on this day in 1939,  I salute you. There'll never be another one like you.

O.K. , I'll add to the dearly departed rock stars theme with the best rock songs to play at a funeral.  You might find something fitting for yourself, bannork.  Of course when the time comes, LOL.

This one is from '92 put it's gotta be played.  Fields Of Gold by Sting off of his Ten Summoner’s Tales release.

This one, too, is slightly outside our time frame.  While I could have used Dylan's original version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door I thought that the Guns N' Roses' cover was too excellent to pass up.  Off of their '91 Use Your Illusion II LP.

This one tugs on the heart strings.  Keep Me In Your Heart by Warren Zevon was written after his diagnosis with cancer.  He passed on Sept. 7th, '03.  Zevon wrote this for his final album, The Wind, recorded in '02 and released in '03.  Perhaps it was played at his own funeral.  Anyway, he was a great musician.

The Prince composition made so famous by Sinéad O’Connor's absolutely heart felt and passionate performance of Nothing Compares To You, released a few days after the birth of the new 90's decade.  Birth and death . . . spiritually and inseparably intertwined for us mere mortal immortals.  I might be moved to pick this one.

More of an upbeat funeral song, Spirit In The Sky is the title track to Norman Greenbaum's '69 LP.  Funerals are actually a good time to rejoice, truth be known.  Death = new life,.  Or rather just a continuation of eternal life.  Granted with a necessary change of form.  Really, though, who doesn't like to receive a fresh new set of clothes every once in a while?  LOL

Though this one is dated 2004 it's simply too beautiful to pass up.  Kristján Kristjánsson with his sister Ellen, from Iceland.  The Nordic Christmas concert from Oslo 2004.  Featuring some great slide guitar.

There's your next theme Tippers- families playing together. Here's a great version of the George Harrison  classic performed by father and daughter.

I have to insert this as a one off as this little girl so sweetly and innocently typifies our natural and irresistible love of music.  Who knows, we may be looking at one of the next generation's super stars.  Will have to check back in about 20 years.

Glad you liked Kevin, Tippers. Here he is in search of an older woman reclining on a deckchair on the promenade. Andy Summers on guitar.

Thanks again, bannork, for another new "old" find for me.  Here's a bluesy number, Hot Potato, with Coyne on vocals in the band Siren ‎from their '71 Strange Locomotion LP.

Two thumbs up on this sweet tune, bannork.  And it's an interesting theme.  Edgar Winter / Johnny Winter (d. July 16, 2014) immediately popped into my head.  I'll have to try it once my current theme "dies out."  LOL

Johnny and Edgar Winter with Fast Life Rider from the '69 Second Winter LP.

The classic Righteous Brothers tune, Unchained Melody, set to the 1990 Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winning film Ghost starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore.  Released on their Phil Spector (d. January 16, 2021) produced '65 Just Once In My Life LP.  RIP Bobby Hatfield (d. November 5, 2003).

One of the best song covers ever was by Tim Buckley's (d. June 29, 1975) kid, Jeff, recorded in '94 from his only complete LP, Grace, due to his early demise (d. May 29, 1997).  Like father like son, though Jeff surpassed his pop by four years.  This song is an absolute must for anyone's music collection.

And Hallelujah, this theme has passed from this thread as well (d. February 15, 2021), never to be seen again unless a miraculous Resurrection will prove beyond the shadow of the grave that blessed earthly existence is indeed eternal in yet another form for yet another life.

Wait for it.

Happy Birthday Peter Gabriel.  The best song you ever wrote.

Agreed that this is one of Gabriel's best tunes.  So here's the studio version of Gabriel's tribute to S.A. activist Bantu Stephen Biko (d. 12 September 1977) and appearing on his '80 Peter Gabriel III, or Melt LP.

The synchronicity over Gabriel's Biko tune is stunningly amazing to me . . . from bannork posting it to my posting the original to "accidentally" running across this latest version.  Just found what is perhaps the best version of Biko and it seems to have been released very, very recently.  The date on the YT upload is two days ago, the 13th Feb. 2021.  As Rolling Stone's published article dated yesterday, Valentine's Day, explains:

Peter Gabriel has re-recorded his 1980 protest classic “Biko” with help from 25 musicians from around the globe, including Beninese vocalist and activist Angélique Kidjo, Yo-Yo Ma, the Cape Town Ensemble, Sebastian Robertson, and bassist Meshell Ndegeocello.

The video was produced by Sebastian Robertson and Mark Johnson as part of Playing for Change’s Song Around the World initiative.

An extremely powerful version indeed!  Enjoy at an elevated volume.
